Recently, it was announced that ITA Airways, the flag carrier of Italy, had launched ticket sales for codeshare flights with five Lufthansa Group airlines: Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Air Dolomiti. The codeshare flights are set to be available for travel beginning March 30. This new initiative is expected to significantly improve connectivity, offering passengers the ability to book a single ticket, check in at their departure airport, and collect their baggage at their final destination.
Expanded Connectivity for ITA Airways Passengers
Through the launch of these codeshare agreements, ITA Airways passengers will be able to enjoy greater flexibility and convenience. They will have access to more than 100 new connections that will become available starting in the summer season. This expansion includes both domestic and international destinations, with Italy’s most popular tourist locations—such as Sicily, Sardinia, Calabria, and Apulia—being particularly accessible. The codeshare partnership ensures that Lufthansa Group customers can easily reach ITA Airways’ extensive network of destinations in Italy, including cities such as Florence, Palermo, Venice, Milan Linate, and Turin. International destinations like Tirana, Sofia, Malta, and Athens will also be reachable via ITA Airways’ hubs in Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate.
For ITA Airways passengers, the codeshare agreements will enable them to travel under the AZ code on Lufthansa-operated flights from major German airports, such as Frankfurt and Munich. These flights will take them to several cities in Italy, including Verona, Catania, Bologna, Milan Linate, Rome, and Venice. Additionally, passengers will be able to travel to selected international destinations such as Prague, Dublin, and Krakow.
Greater Access to SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines Networks
The agreement between ITA Airways and SWISS will provide passengers access to a wider range of destinations. From Zurich, ITA Airways passengers will have the ability to fly to major Italian cities like Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, Bologna, and Naples. Moreover, they will also be able to reach international destinations within the Swiss carrier’s network, including Warsaw, Stockholm, and Copenhagen.
The partnership with Austrian Airlines will enable ITA Airways customers to travel to and from Vienna. Passengers will be able to reach Italian destinations like Cagliari, Naples, Palermo, Florence, Rome, and Milan Malpensa, as well as European locations including Innsbruck, Warsaw, and Podgorica.
The collaboration with Brussels Airlines will make travel between Brussels and Italy even more convenient for ITA Airways passengers. They will be able to fly to Italian cities such as Venice, Bologna, and Milan Malpensa. Air Dolomiti, another Lufthansa Group member, will provide numerous connections to various cities within Italy, including Florence, Turin, Venice, and Milan Linate.
Loyalty Programs: Volare and Miles & More
A key advantage of these new codeshare agreements is the ability for members of ITA Airways’ loyalty program, Volare, to earn and redeem points on flights operated by the Lufthansa Group airlines, including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines. Between March 1 and April 15, 2025, Volare members will be eligible for an exclusive commercial offer to earn extra points on their flights. Similarly, Lufthansa Group’s frequent flyer program, Miles & More, which has 36 million members, will also be able to earn and redeem points for ITA Airways flights.
Growing Codeshare Network for Future Expansion
The collaboration between ITA Airways and the Lufthansa Group is a significant step towards improving the connectivity and travel options for passengers. The two airlines are working to expand their codeshare offerings even further, with additional connections scheduled to be introduced in the upcoming summer season. These developments mark a critical phase in the ongoing integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group, following the completion of the transaction that officially brought the Italian carrier into the fold of the German group.
The codeshare agreements between ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group airlines represent a key milestone in expanding connectivity for travelers. According to statements made by the CEO of ITA Airways, Joerg Eberhart, the new partnerships are designed to offer passengers the benefit of more destinations and seamless travel options. With over 100 new connections, these agreements will significantly enhance the travel experience for those flying with ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group airlines.
Global Impact on Travelers
The addition of these new codeshare agreements will have far-reaching consequences for travelers. For those looking to explore Italy, the partnership will create more convenient and direct routes to various Italian cities, making it easier to reach popular destinations. Moreover, the collaboration offers a greater degree of flexibility, allowing passengers to book connecting flights seamlessly across both ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group airlines.
The codeshare agreements also demonstrate how collaboration among airlines can enhance global connectivity, streamline travel experiences, and promote more seamless travel between regions. With loyalty program benefits extending to multiple airlines, passengers will also find more opportunities to earn and redeem points, improving their overall travel experience.
