Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) saw a strong performance in August 2024, with Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) reporting about 4.92 million passengers for the month, marking a 23.0% year-on-year increase. Cargo throughput also surged by 10.6%, reaching 406,000 tonnes, while flight movements rose by 26.1% to 31,605 compared to August 2023.
On peak days in August 2024, daily passenger traffic exceeded 170,000, with HKIA handling a post-pandemic high of 174,600 passengers on 18 August. All passenger segments, including Hong Kong residents, visitors, and transfer/transit passengers, experienced significant growth. The highest traffic increases were recorded for Southeast Asia, Mainland China, and Japan.
Cargo throughput saw another month of double-digit growth, with exports driving a 14.6% rise year-on-year. The largest growth in cargo traffic was recorded in Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
For the first eight months of 2024, HKIA handled 34.9 million passengers and 237,435 flight movements, reflecting growth rates of 43.5% and 41.4%, respectively, over the same period in 2023. Cargo traffic also grew by 16.5%, reaching 3.2 million tonnes.
On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume increased by 77.1% to 50.1 million, flight movements rose by 56.0% to 345,615, and cargo throughput grew by 15.9%, reaching 4.8 million tonnes.
Looking ahead, HKIA will welcome two new passenger airlines, Indonesia AirAsia and Thai Lion Air, launching new routes to Indonesia and Thailand in October. Additionally, new destinations, Koror in Palau and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, will be introduced in August and October, expanding HKIA’s extensive air network.
