Hong Kong International Airport

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has experienced a significant surge in passenger traffic and cargo throughput, according to the latest air traffic figures released by the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) for February 2025.

The Chinese New Year period saw HKIA reach a new high, with passenger traffic peaking on February 2, 2025, when approximately 195,000 passengers passed through the airport, setting a new daily record since the pandemic. This milestone signifies a strong recovery, nearing pre-pandemic passenger levels. For the entire month of February, HKIA welcomed 4.5 million passengers, marking a robust 7.0% year-on-year increase. Additionally, the airport saw a rise in flight movements, which increased by 5.2% to 29,075 compared to the same month in 2024.

The cumulative passenger traffic for the first two months of 2025 further highlights the ongoing recovery, with HKIA handling 9.8 million passengers, a 17.3% increase over the same period in 2024. Flight movements surged by 11.2%, totaling 62,735. Notably, transit and transfer passengers grew by 36%, and visitor numbers saw a 15% increase. Traffic between Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, along with Japan, saw the most substantial increases.

In terms of cargo, February 2025 also saw positive results, with HKIA handling 324,000 tonnes of cargo, maintaining levels similar to February 2024. Over the first two months of the year, cargo throughput rose by 2.2%, totaling 718,000 tonnes. Transshipment cargo saw the highest growth, with a 9.6% year-on-year increase. Cargo traffic to and from Europe and the Middle East saw the most significant gains among major trading regions.

On a 12-month rolling basis, the overall performance of the airport remained strong. Passenger volume surged by 25.0% year-on-year, reaching 54.5 million, while flight movements grew by 23.2% to 369,635. Cargo volume also showed impressive growth, with a double-digit increase of 11.2%, bringing the total to 4.95 million tonnes.

In a move that further strengthens HKIA’s air network, Tibet Airlines introduced a new flight route to Lhasa via Chengdu in February, expanding the airport’s already extensive global connectivity.

With the continued growth in both passenger traffic and cargo throughput, Hong Kong International Airport is well-positioned to maintain its role as one of the leading global aviation hubs in the coming years.
