Himalaya Airlines will launch weekly flights from Pokhara to Lhasa in March 2025, enhancing Nepal’s international connectivity and boosting tourism and trade.
KATHMANDU, MARCH 4, 2025 – After a two-year wait since the inauguration of Pokhara International Airport, Himalaya Airlines is finally set to begin its commercial flight operations from this newly established hub. The airline will commence direct flights from Pokhara to Lhasa, China, on March 31, 2025, marking a significant milestone for both the airport and Nepal’s aviation sector.
In an official announcement, Himalaya Airlines revealed its plans to operate regular services on the Kathmandu-Lhasa-Pokhara-Kathmandu route, with a weekly schedule connecting the picturesque city of Pokhara with the Tibetan capital. This new service is poised to enhance connectivity between Nepal and China, opening up fresh opportunities for tourism and business exchanges.
The airline has already secured the necessary flight clearance from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN). Gyanendra Bhul, Information Officer at CAAN, confirmed that Himalaya Airlines has received approval to operate its first scheduled flight on the newly approved route, bolstering the airline’s growing presence in the region.
In a similar development, Sichuan Airlines, one of China’s leading carriers, is also preparing to launch a weekly commercial flight between Pokhara and Chengdu, China, starting on March 18, 2025. However, the airline is still awaiting formal approval from CAAN to begin operations.
The opening of direct flights between Pokhara and Lhasa is anticipated to significantly enhance tourism flow from China to Nepal. Lhasa, often referred to as the “Roof of the World,” is a city rich in culture and history, and the new aviation routes will facilitate easier travel for Chinese visitors looking to explore Nepal’s natural beauty and heritage.
Currently, Himalaya Airlines operates five weekly flights from Kathmandu, and the expansion of its network to Pokhara reflects the growing demand for air travel within Nepal and between neighboring countries. The increased connectivity is expected to further boost Nepal’s profile as a key tourist destination in the region.
As of March 2025, both Himalaya Airlines and Sichuan Airlines are set to play vital roles in strengthening Nepal’s international air network, making it more accessible to travelers from China and beyond.
