
Helsinki’s public transport system has unveiled an innovative solution for winter rail maintenance by repurposing a vintage tram into a specialized de-icing vehicle. The project, led by Kaupunkiliikenne, the city’s transport operator, ensures uninterrupted service on Light Rail Line 15 during Finland’s harsh winters.
According to the City of Helsinki’s transport department, maintaining overhead electrification infrastructure is critical for preventing ice buildup that can disrupt light rail operations. The converted tram, now known as “Ananas” (Pineapple) due to its distinctive yellow livery, is a prime example of sustainable urban mobility and resourceful engineering.
From Passenger Tram to Cutting-Edge De-Icer
The tram originally entered service in the 1980s and underwent a 1999 refurbishment, adding a low-floor section for accessibility. For its new life as a de-icing vehicle, engineers at Kaupunkiliikenne’s maintenance division removed the passenger seating and modified the structure for bidirectional operation by installing a second driver’s cab.
Instead of using a traditional felt roll to apply antifreeze, the new system deploys a high-tech spray mechanism, ensuring even distribution of de-icing fluid on the overhead power lines. This method improves efficiency while reducing maintenance time. The system is monitored through 10 CCTV cameras, providing real-time oversight for transport engineers.
