Green Tourism, a global leader in sustainability certification for the tourism and hospitality industry, has entered a strategic partnership with Travel Counsellors, the UK’s largest and rapidly expanding technology platform for travel entrepreneurs.

This collaboration responds to the growing consumer demand for sustainable travel experiences, enabling Travel Counsellors’ directly contracted hotels to achieve Green Tourism’s globally recognised sustainability certification.

Green Tourism’s standards, endorsed by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), allow businesses to showcase their genuine commitment to sustainability, appealing to eco-conscious leisure and corporate travelers who increasingly prioritize booking environmentally friendly trips.

Green Tourism has also aligned with the Travalyst coalition criteria, promoting industry-wide consistency in sustainability certifications across travel booking platforms.

Supported by sustainability consultancy Mission: Net Zero, this initiative provides hotels and hospitality businesses partnering with Travel Counsellors a clear sustainability roadmap to achieve Green Tourism certification.

Participating hotels will receive guidance on adopting sustainable practices, including energy efficiency, carbon footprint reduction, water conservation, and biodiversity protection.

Additional benefits for partners include a 10% discount on Green Tourism’s annual membership fees for the duration of their membership, third-party verification to uphold globally recognised sustainability standards, and personalized support for continuous improvement in responsible tourism practices.

This partnership is part of Travel Counsellors’ broader commitment to responsible travel, following the launch of its Responsible Travel campaign earlier this year. The campaign promotes sustainable destinations and hotels, supports local communities, and offers tips for reducing travel’s carbon footprint.

According to Travel Counsellors’ August 2024 Travel Tracker report, 45% of holidaymakers surveyed said recent media coverage of the climate crisis influenced their decision to consider more sustainable travel options. This partnership with Green Tourism seeks to make eco-friendly travel choices more accessible for consumers.

Andrea Nicholas, Chief Executive of Green Tourism, said: “With eco-minded leisure and corporate guests increasingly seeking out sustainable travel experiences, this groundbreaking arrangement between Green Tourism and Travel Counsellors will help more businesses make positive impacts and cost savings, enhance their reputation, and gain a competitive advantage.”

Joe Whittle, Sustainability Lead at Travel Counsellors, said: “At Travel Counsellors, we recognise the growing desire from our customers to make more responsible and sustainable travel choices. Our partnership with Green Tourism reflects our commitment to supporting our partners in adopting best practices that protect the environment and enhance the sustainability of the travel experiences we offer as we continue our journey to more sustainable travel.”
