The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) has announced that 2024 was a record-breaking year for Greek tourism and air travel, with passenger traffic at the 24 airports it manages increasing by 9.3% compared to 2023.

A total of 11,975,632 passengers travelled through HCAA-managed airports in 2024, up from 11,092,141 the previous year.

Across all 39 Greek airports, including those managed by Fraport Greece and Athens International Airport, passenger traffic for 2024 reached 79,403,911, compared to 72,616,584 in 2023.

This growth aligns with a 7.6% increase in flight movements, totaling 603,931 in 2024.

Tourism continues to play a vital role in Greece’s economy.

According to preliminary studies shared by the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) and PwC, Greece welcomed 41.6 million tourists in 2024, a 22.4% increase compared to the 36 million visitors in 2023.

Tourism contributes approximately 13% to the country’s GDP, with major markets including the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy.

While Greece’s tourism achievements are noteworthy, challenges remain.

The Athens-Macedonian News Agency highlights the need to address overtourism in destinations like Santorini and Mykonos, expand the tourist season, and develop alternative, sustainable tourism models.

The government also emphasizes the importance of improving infrastructure and managing short-term rentals.

The Greek government continues to focus on enhancing its tourism sector, positioning the country as a competitive destination alongside Spain and Italy.

Despite climate-related challenges, Greece’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and hospitality remain key attractions for international visitors.
