Goa’s tourism
 domestic surge and international recovery

Goa’s tourism thrives with a domestic surge and international recovery, boosted by safety initiatives, new charters, and a focus on sustainable, quality tourism experiences.

Amid recent conversations around Goa’s tourism health and the shifts in global and domestic travel dynamics, the Department of Tourism, Goa, shares an accurate assessment of the state’s tourism landscape.

Domestic tourism in Goa has surged, with over 8 million Indian tourists visiting in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic numbers. This increase highlights the success of initiatives aimed at rejuvenating the sector and positioning Goa as a premier choice for domestic travelers.

While global tourism has faced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting international arrivals, Goa’s foreign tourism is steadily recovering. In 2023, international visitor numbers reached over 450,000, a significant rise as global travel regained momentum.

It’s essential to consider that Goa, a state in India, is often compared to destinations like Sri Lanka, which are entire countries. Such comparisons may provide a skewed perspective.

Goa faces certain challenges, notably in scheduled international air connections. The state government is collaborating with central authorities to reassess point-of-call agreements and expand seat allocations, aiming to strengthen global connectivity.

Like other destinations, Goa’s tourism costs—airfare and accommodations—can sometimes be high, which may lead travelers to explore alternative options.

Top global hotel brands continue to invest in Goa, with numerous new properties in the pipeline, affirming the destination’s growth potential.

Safety remains a priority, underscored by the “Pink Force” initiative, which enhances safety for women and strengthens Goa’s reputation as a secure destination. Additionally, a tourist helpline (1364) provides information and support, and the Beach Vigil App improves safety across popular beach areas.

Goa is also gaining popularity as a destination for weddings and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events, drawing renowned brands and high-profile events.

International visitor access is further bolstered by new charter flights from Moscow, Ekaterinburg, London, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and an upcoming charter from Poland on November 8, 2024. These routes signify Goa’s appeal beyond beach tourism, attracting visitors to areas like Dudhsagar Falls and the scenic hinterlands.

Efforts are underway to secure better direct connectivity with global markets, with collaborations involving major airlines and travel platforms like Agoda, MakeMyTrip, and Airbnb. However, establishing direct international links requires further support from the Government of India, which is crucial for enhancing Goa’s global connectivity and appeal.

The Ekadasha Teertha Circuit initiative celebrates Goa’s spiritual richness, combining eco-tourism with cultural preservation. Through Regenerative Tourism, Goa is committed to sustainable practices that renew natural and cultural landscapes, ensuring tourism benefits local communities and the environment, prioritizing quality over quantity in its tourism model.
