EVA Airways joins China Airlines, Qantas, Virgin Atlantic, StarLux, UNI Air, Jeju Air & more in banning power bank use onboard from March 1, 2025.
EVA Airways Bans Power Bank Usage In-Flight Starting March 1, 2025
Starting March 1, 2025, Taiwan-based EVA Airways will enforce a new safety regulation prohibiting passengers from using or charging power banks and spare lithium batteries while onboard. The airline introduced this measure as part of its latest flight safety protocols, joining a growing number of carriers implementing similar restrictions.
Key Restrictions & Safety Measures:
No Charging Power Banks Onboard – Passengers cannot use or charge power banks or spare lithium batteries during flights. Instead, they are advised to use the AC power outlets and USB (Type-A) ports available at their seats.
Carry-On Requirement – Power banks and lithium batteries must be packed in carry-on luggage and stored safely to prevent pressure or damage. They remain strictly prohibited in checked baggage.
Global Airlines Implementing Similar Policies – EVA Airways joins several airlines worldwide in restricting power bank use during flights, including:
- Taiwanese Airlines: China Airlines, EVA Air, StarLux Airlines, Mandarin Airlines, UNI Air, and Tigerair Taiwan.
- South Korean Airlines: Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Air Busan, and Jeju Air.
- International Airlines: Qantas, Virgin Atlantic, and other major carriers implementing restrictions for in-flight safety.
Precedent from South Korea – Earlier this month, on February 13, 2025, South Korean airlines implemented a similar ban following an incident in January involving an Air Busan flight, which raised concerns about potential lithium battery fires.
Industry-Wide Focus on Safety – While some airlines, such as China Airlines, advise passengers against using power banks without an official ban, others, like StarLux Airlines, have prohibited their use since their launch in 2018.
This move by EVA Airways underscores the aviation industry’s commitment to enhancing flight safety by addressing the risks associated with lithium batteries onboard aircraft.
