Egypt is setting its sights on welcoming 30 million tourists annually by 2030, a goal spotlighted at the 28th Eastern Mediterranean International Tourism and Travel Exhibition (EMITT) in Istanbul.
The country is enhancing its partnership with Türkiye, rolling out new tourism campaigns, and prioritizing sustainable development to cement its reputation as a global travel destination.
A major milestone in Egypt’s tourism landscape is the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the world’s largest archaeological museum dedicated to a single civilization.
Since its soft opening in October 2024, the museum has attracted over 300,000 visitors. While some sections are still being finalized, guests can already explore the Grand Hall, monumental staircase, gardens, and select galleries, including the highly anticipated Tutankhamun collection.
Featuring cutting-edge display technologies, GEM offers interactive exhibits, mixed reality experiences, and real-time conservation work, positioning itself as a premier cultural landmark.
Egypt’s latest tourism initiative showcases the country’s diverse experiences, inviting visitors to explore more than 70 museums and numerous archaeological sites, such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Valley of Kings, and the ancient city of Alexandria.
Beyond these iconic attractions, the campaign promotes lesser-known routes, encouraging travelers to venture off the beaten path.
Religious tourism remains a focus, with ongoing enhancements to the Holy Family Route, a 3,500-kilometer pilgrimage trail featuring 25 certified sites. Initial efforts are centered on five key locations, incorporating new hotel accommodations and integrating them into long cruise itineraries.
Eco and adventure tourism are also gaining momentum, with increased investments in the White Desert, Siwa Oasis, and Red Sea diving hotspots.
Egypt’s Mediterranean coastline is emerging as one of the fastest-growing destinations, witnessing a surge in demand last year, with flights, visitor numbers, and tourism infrastructure nearly tripling. Three major airports currently serve the region, supporting its expansion.
Despite strong growth, the tourism sector faces challenges such as regional instability, limited hotel capacity, and global economic fluctuations. However, optimism remains high regarding Egypt’s ability to adapt and thrive.
Türkiye has become an increasingly important market for Egyptian tourism, with Turkish visitor numbers rising by 70 percent in 2024.
Direct flights from Istanbul and other key Turkish cities to Cairo, Sharm El-Sheikh, and Luxor have made travel between the two countries more accessible. Egypt anticipates an additional 30 percent increase in Turkish tourists in 2025.
A newly signed memorandum of understanding lays the groundwork for joint marketing initiatives, expanded tourism exchange, and collaboration in archaeology and heritage restoration.
To further strengthen tourism ties, Egypt and Türkiye plan to launch trade missions, enabling Turkish tour operators to promote services in Egypt and vice versa.
Additionally, Egypt has acknowledged the return of historical artifacts that were previously confiscated from smugglers.
