As the festive season approaches, many are seeking ways to immerse themselves in the holiday spirit with family activities or a cozy getaway. For Scots, the perfect festive escape lies close to home, as Edinburgh’s Christmas Market has been crowned Europe’s most beautiful for 2024.
According to a study by print materials supply firm Solopress, which analyzed over 60 Christmas markets across the UK and Europe, Edinburgh topped the list of the most scenic destinations.
The findings were based on TikTok and Instagram posts, with Edinburgh amassing an impressive 2,738 TikTok posts and 55,304 Instagram hashtags celebrating its festive charm.
Set against the iconic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, the city’s renowned Christmas Market officially reopened on Friday, welcoming visitors to a winter wonderland filled with dazzling light displays, nostalgic carnival rides, and cozy spots for mulled wine.
The event draws thousands of tourists to Princes Street Gardens each year, and this season’s organizers have promised even more sparkle and joy.
London’s Winter Wonderland claimed the second spot in the rankings with 3,409 TikTok posts and 43,237 Instagram hashtags, while the Strasbourg Christmas Market in France ranked third with 581 TikTok posts and 34,536 Instagram mentions.
Vienna and Budapest rounded out the top five, further highlighting Europe’s rich tradition of enchanting Christmas markets.
This year, Edinburgh’s market features an array of exciting new attractions alongside classic family favorites. The much-loved market stalls, Christmas Ferris Wheel, StarFlyer, Helter-Skelter, and ice rink have all made a return.
Visitors can also explore the Winter Warmer zone and admire the Winter Windows trail, which showcases festive artwork created by local schoolchildren.
A new highlight for 2024 is the Christmas Tree Maze in St Andrew Square, where families can navigate through 450 illuminated Christmas trees.
For younger visitors, Santa’s Stories offers the chance to meet Santa Claus, listen to festive tales, and receive a special gift.
Additionally, festive workshops provide attendees with the opportunity to craft wreaths and ornaments, adding a personal touch to their holiday celebrations.
Edinburgh’s Culture and Communities Convener, Val Walker, expressed her excitement about this year’s lineup, stating, “Edinburgh at Christmas is a magical experience, and it’s exciting to be announcing such a varied programme of events and attractions for 2024.
We will see the return of many favorites like the Traditional Christmas Market, Santa Stories, and Big Wheel, as well as a brand-new Christmas Tree Maze in St Andrew Square.”
Walker also emphasized the inclusivity of the event, noting that it’s designed to welcome families and Christmas enthusiasts of all ages. She highlighted the opportunities to raise funds for local charities and the free tickets donated to community groups, which help spread Christmas cheer across the capital.
With its blend of traditional charm, new attractions, and a commitment to inclusivity, Edinburgh’s Christmas Market continues to solidify its reputation as a must-visit destination for the holiday season.
