Urgent travel alert for UK tourists as airport strikes loom
British travelers are being urged to brace for major disruption as widespread strikes are set to hit several key airports across Europe.
On Monday, March 24, both easyJet pilots and Italian airport ground crews are expected to stage a coordinated 24-hour walkout—marking the second such protest this year. The strike action, beginning at midnight, poses a serious risk of chaos for holidaymakers, with significant delays and cancellations anticipated.
The joint strike is being organized by several influential labor unions including ANPAC (the National Association of Professional Civil Aviation), FILT (the Italian Federation of Transport Workers), and CGIL (the Italian General Confederation of Labour). For the first time, both budget airline pilots and Italy’s largest airport ground staff group, Assohandlers, will unite in protest.
Assohandlers—responsible for baggage handling and ground operations for major airlines such as easyJet, Ryanair, and Wizz Air—operates in key airports like Milan Malpensa, Rome Fiumicino, Naples, Catania, and Venice.
The situation is especially challenging for easyJet, as the airline faces a dual blow: striking pilots and walkouts from ground staff at one of its major partners in Italy. While airlines can attempt to bring in standby or management pilots to keep operations running, doing so is complex and doesn’t always prevent flight cancellations.
Travelers with upcoming plans through affected airports are strongly advised to check with their airlines, prepare for delays, and have backup options in place.
