Cruise vacations are evolving, with major cruise lines making key policy changes to enhance guest experiences and refine onboard regulations. From banning controversial decor to rolling out new perks, these adjustments reflect the industry’s ongoing efforts to cater to modern travelers.
Among the latest updates, Carnival Cruise Line has officially prohibited the use of upside-down pineapple door decorations, a move aimed at maintaining a more family-friendly environment. Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean has taken a different approach by enforcing a ban on camouflage clothing onboard, ensuring a more uniform dress code across its fleet.
Beyond these rule changes, cruise lines are introducing guest-friendly upgrades to elevate onboard experiences. Princess Cruises has launched a premium zero-alcohol cocktail collection, offering an elegant selection of alcohol-free beverages for guests who want sophisticated drink options without the spirits. Norwegian Cruise Line is also enhancing convenience by introducing a flexible late check-out program, allowing passengers to extend their stay onboard for a more relaxed departure.
However, not all changes are being met with enthusiasm—one particular update has stirred debate among travelers: an increase in automatic gratuity charges across multiple cruise lines in 2025.
Why Are Gratuities Increasing?
Cruise lines apply automatic gratuity fees to compensate crew members, including stateroom attendants, dining servers, bartenders, and other essential staff who contribute to a seamless guest experience. These charges are typically added to guests’ onboard accounts, though some passengers choose to prepay them before sailing.
As operating costs rise and cruise lines adjust their wage structures, several companies have announced increases in these service fees, which will take effect throughout 2025.
Cruise Lines Raising Gratuity Fees in 2025
Multiple cruise brands have confirmed higher gratuity rates for the upcoming travel season, including:
- Margaritaville at Sea (February 2025) – Gratuities for standard staterooms increased from $18 to $20 per person, while suite passengers now pay $24 instead of $22.
- Disney Cruise Line (January 2025) – Standard stateroom rates jumped from $14.50 to $16 per person, while concierge and suite guests saw a steeper increase from $23.50 to $27.25 per person.
- Royal Caribbean Cruises (November 2024) – Gratuity fees for suites increased from $20.50 to $21 per person, while all other stateroom categories now pay $18.50 instead of $18.
- Princess Cruises (August–October 2024) – Guests staying in suites now pay $19 per person (up from $18), while those in mini-suites, cabanas, and Reserve Collection staterooms pay $18 (previously $17). Standard staterooms also saw an increase from $16 to $17 per person.
Disney and Margaritaville at Sea Lead the Price Hikes
Among the cruise lines adjusting gratuity fees, Disney Cruise Line has imposed the highest increase, with concierge and suite gratuities rising by $3.75 per person. Margaritaville at Sea follows closely, implementing a $2 increase for both standard and suite accommodations.
How Are Passengers Reacting?
The reaction to these gratuity increases has been mixed. Some travelers acknowledge that the changes help support hardworking crew members, while others express frustration over the growing list of cruise-related expenses. Many cruisers who prefer to tip staff personally are now reconsidering whether to opt out of the automatic charges entirely.
With cruise lines continuously adapting their policies, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of both exciting enhancements and controversial fee adjustments. Whether these gratuity hikes will impact future bookings remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—cruising is evolving, and passengers will need to navigate these changes as they plan their next adventure.
