In an extraordinary gesture of remembrance, Delta Air Lines will once again operate special charter flights to Normandy, France, in honor of the 81st anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. For the fourth consecutive year, Delta continues its exclusive commitment as the only U.S. carrier to fly directly to this historic region, paying tribute to the heroic sacrifices that changed the course of history during World War II. With every flight, Delta reinforces its unwavering dedication to preserving the memory of those who fought for freedom.
A Legacy of Honor for WWII Veterans
Delta’s Normandy Legacy Flight program, in collaboration with the Best Defense Foundation and Michelin, remains a cornerstone of the airline’s commitment to honoring the legacy of World War II veterans. This year, 30 distinguished veterans will make the poignant return to Normandy, where they will participate in solemn ceremonies commemorating their courage, their sacrifices, and the enduring significance of the D-Day landings.
Scheduled to depart on May 31, 2025, from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), the charter flight will make its way to Deauville (DOL), with the return flight set for June 9. The previous year’s Flight DL9994, operated by a Boeing 767-300ER, proudly displayed a special “80th Anniversary D-Day & Battle Of Normandy” decal, symbolizing the weight of history carried on every flight.
Once in Normandy, the veterans will take part in a series of emotionally charged events, honoring the lives lost and celebrating the victory that secured freedom for Europe. To ensure their comfort and dignity throughout the journey, each veteran will be accompanied by a specially trained caregiver from the Best Defense Foundation. Delta has also partnered with Aviramp to guarantee that all veterans, regardless of mobility, can board and disembark with ease and respect.
Educating Tomorrow’s Leaders Through History
Delta’s commitment to preserving the past and educating future generations goes beyond honoring veterans. This year, the airline will also bring ten students to Normandy, providing them with the unparalleled opportunity to walk alongside the very veterans who lived through history. These students will visit key sites, including the iconic beaches of Normandy, and participate in the Freedom Prize ceremony in Caen on June 3, where they will gain a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made to protect the freedoms they enjoy today.
The Best Defense Foundation’s mission to heal, reflect, and honor those who served is integral to this program. Since its founding, the nonprofit organization has facilitated veterans’ journeys to historic battlefields across the globe, ensuring that the stories of their bravery and sacrifice remain alive. From Iwo Jima to Belgium, the Netherlands, and beyond, these veterans continue to share their legacy, ensuring future generations carry their memory forward.
Delta’s Unwavering Commitment to Veterans
Delta’s dedication to veterans is woven into the fabric of its operations. With 11% of its workforce comprised of veterans, many of whom continue their service in the Guard and Reserves, the airline stands as a proud supporter of those who served. Delta offers a wide range of programs designed to help veterans transition into new careers, ensuring they have the opportunities they deserve.
Moreover, Delta’s support for military families extends far beyond the Normandy flights. Through its partnership with the Fisher House Foundation, Delta provides free housing to families of military personnel receiving medical care. The airline also strengthens its ties to military organizations such as the USO, Toys for Tots, and Folds of Honor, providing vital resources and assistance to those who have sacrificed for their country.
As Normandy’s deep gratitude continues to echo for the heroes who liberated its lands, Delta’s commitment ensures that their legacy is never forgotten. With every flight, every event, and every gesture, the airline reaffirms its role in honoring the sacrifice that secured the future of millions. The stories of these brave individuals will endure, carried on by the hearts and minds of future generations.
