Paradox Hotels & Resorts

Paradox Hotels & Resorts is set to make its grand entrance into the Australian hospitality scene on July 1, 2025, with the unveiling of Paradox Sydney. This landmark moment signals the rebirth of the iconic Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel as it transitions into a dynamic new era under the Paradox brand, infusing fresh vitality into one of Sydney’s most celebrated heritage properties revered heritage buildings.

Located at 27 O’Connell Street in the heart of Sydney’s central business district, the landmark sandstone building has been owned by TA Global since 1997. With this debut, Paradox Hotels & Resorts adds Australia to its growing international footprint, joining its existing luxury destinations in Canada, China, Thailand, Singapore, and beyond. The brand is recognized globally for creating immersive experiences rooted in local culture, elevated by intuitive service and distinctive design.

The building itself carries a rich and storied past, reflecting Sydney’s transformation over the decades. Constructed in 1856, it originally served as the headquarters of John Fairfax & Sons, a prominent name in Australian publishing. Through the years, the building transitioned to serve as the headquarters of the Bank of New South Wales before eventually operating under the name WestPac Bank. In 2000, the historic site began its hospitality journey as the five-star Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel, where it earned acclaim for combining heritage charm with contemporary luxury.

Now reimagined as Paradox Sydney, the property embraces its legacy while stepping into a vibrant new identity. The transition to Paradox signifies more than a change in name—it introduces a refreshed philosophy of hospitality that blends timeless architecture with modern sophistication and cultural nuance.

Guests can expect a revitalized experience designed to resonate with today’s global travelers. From the lobby to the guestrooms, Paradox Sydney will reflect a careful balance between preserving the site’s architectural grandeur and infusing it with bold, artistic flair. With its prime location and rich narrative, the hotel is poised to become a compelling new destination for both leisure and business travelers in Sydney.

As Paradox Hotels & Resorts continues to expand its presence worldwide, the Sydney opening underscores the group’s ambition to curate exceptional stays in iconic locations. The launch of Paradox Sydney not only highlights the brand’s dedication to honoring heritage but also its commitment to innovation and global connection in hospitality.

“Paradox is about creating places with soul—hotels that are deeply connected to the people, culture and pulse of the city,” said Tiah Joo Kim, CEO of TA Global and the visionary behind the Paradox brand. A graduate of Sydney’s Macquarie University, Tiah brings a personal connection to the city, making Sydney a fitting milestone for Paradox’s global growth.

“To debut in Australia at such a historic and meaningful heritage address is a major milestone for us. We look forward to bringing our signature blend of culture, creativity, and authentic hospitality to this vibrant city.”

Peter Tudehope, General Manager of Paradox Sydney, said the change reflects a future-forward approach to luxury hospitality in the city.

“Since 1856, this landmark building has been shaped by three great custodians: The Sydney Morning Herald, the Bank of New South Wales and Radisson Blu. Each has contributed to its remarkable story. Today, as Paradox takes the helm, we are excited to write the next vibrant chapter that celebrates its heritage while forging a fresh and inspiring future.”

After undergoing a transformative $13.5 million renovation in 2015, Paradox Sydney continues to uphold its reputation for delivering world-class hospitality, elegant accommodations, and award-winning culinary experiences. The hotel boasts 364 well-appointed guest rooms and suites, cutting-edge conference and event spaces, a fully equipped wellness center, and a sophisticated restaurant and bar—all nestled within its grand heritage sandstone exterior and sleek, modern interiors.

Looking ahead, the hotel will begin a phased revitalization process to reflect the distinct identity and design ethos of the Paradox brand. Enhancements will be carefully implemented to align with evolving guest expectations while preserving the charm and prestige of the property. Importantly, the hotel will remain open and fully operational during this transition, ensuring that all guests enjoy an uninterrupted and elevated stay.
