Quintana Roo has solidified its position as a key entry point for international travelers, boasting the highest levels of connectivity among airports in Mexico. This connectivity is not only convenient for visitors from neighboring countries but also facilitates increasing access for travelers from Asia—a market poised for significant growth.
With a 2025 budget of 750 million pesos, the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ) is doubling down on efforts to attract visitors from diverse regions, including Asia. Data from the federal government’s Datatur platform reveals a surge in Asian tourism. As of November 2024, China ranked 10th among countries contributing international arrivals to Mexico, with 187,726 visitors—an impressive 38.8% increase compared to 2023.
India followed closely in 15th place, with 127,298 visitors representing a 3.9% year-on-year rise. South Korea and Japan also showed promising growth, with 97,330 and 86,116 tourists, respectively, marking increases of 15.5% and 0.4%. These trends demonstrate the growing interest of Asian travelers in exploring the diverse attractions Mexico has to offer.
The Cancun International Airport remains the primary gateway for international visitors, processing 43.9% of arrivals. Newly opened Tulum Airport has also begun contributing to the influx, accounting for 1.3%, while Cozumel Airport handles 1.1%. Although Chetumal’s data is not yet available, these statistics reflect Quintana Roo’s vital role in Mexico’s tourism infrastructure.
Unlocking Asia’s Potential for Quintana Roo
While the numbers show promising growth, Asian tourists still represent a small share of overall visitors compared to the dominant markets of the United States and Canada. However, this small base is a golden opportunity, as Asian travelers are known for their higher spending habits, making them a valuable demographic for tourism stakeholders.
Quintana Roo’s tourism planners are taking proactive steps to tap into this potential. By enhancing marketing campaigns tailored to Asian audiences, partnering with key players in the Asian travel industry, and showcasing the region’s unique attractions, the state is working to establish itself as a prime destination for long-haul travelers.
The region’s white sand beaches, vibrant culture, and iconic Mayan heritage sites offer exactly the kind of experiences that appeal to high-spending, experience-driven tourists. Future projects like the Maya Train are set to further improve accessibility and enhance the overall visitor experience, making Quintana Roo even more attractive to international audiences.
As Quintana Roo looks toward a future of diversified tourism, its growing appeal among Asian travelers marks a pivotal step in expanding its global reach. By addressing the needs and preferences of this emerging market, the state is not only opening new doors for itself but also redefining Mexico’s place on the world tourism map.
