Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo Reviews Tourism Development Plans for Gharana Wetland and Suchetgarh Border Destination
Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo chaired a comprehensive meeting to assess ongoing efforts aimed at transforming the Gharana Wetland and Suchetgarh in Jammu into prime tourist attractions.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including the Principal Secretary of Culture, Commissioner Secretaries of Forest and Tourism, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Chief Wildlife Warden, Deputy Commissioner Jammu, DG Budget, and representatives from the BSF and Army, along with other relevant officers.
Enhancing Tourism at Suchetgarh Border
To boost tourist visits to Suchetgarh, the Chief Secretary emphasized the need for upgrading visitor facilities. He directed the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for constructing an all-weather pavilion capable of accommodating large groups of tourists.
He proposed the establishment of a war museum by the BSF at the border, showcasing the bravery of Indian soldiers during the 1965 and 1971 wars, as well as other local tales of valor. Drawing inspiration from similar museums at Gulmarg and Akhnoor, he suggested the inclusion of art, crafts, and digital displays highlighting the history of the region.
Commissioner Secretary of Tourism, Yasha Mudgal, updated the gathering on the department’s previous promotional campaigns for the destination. It was disclosed that Rs 151 lakh had already been invested in developing the Suchetgarh corridor. Projects completed included the construction of a saluting base, pathways, gender-specific restrooms, security posts, and furniture for the retreat parade at the Heritage BOP Octroi Post.
Ongoing works, such as the creation of an entry gate, parking facilities, beautification, and related infrastructure, are progressing with an estimated cost of Rs 80 lakh. These efforts are 55% complete under the current project.
Advancing Eco-Tourism at Gharana Wetland
Regarding the Gharana Wetland, Chief Wildlife Warden Sarvesh Rai briefed the Chief Secretary about the measures taken to promote the area as an eco-tourism hotspot. Facilities introduced by the department have significantly increased tourist and birdwatcher footfall, with over 27,000 visitors recorded last year.
Additionally, scientific management of the wetland has expanded its water surface and attracted more bird species. A two-story eco-tourism hub and a watchtower are under construction to provide visitors with amenities in a single location. The site is also equipped with systems for solid, liquid, and sewage waste treatment to maintain the wetland’s pristine environment.
These initiatives aim to elevate both Suchetgarh and the Gharana Wetland as sought-after destinations, showcasing Jammu’s unique cultural and natural heritage.
