Cathay Group

The Cathay Group has announced impressive traffic results for February 2025, marking a significant achievement in passenger numbers and expanding its global network. In a statement released by the airline group, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau shared that February was a particularly strong month, driven by the peak travel period surrounding the Lunar New Year holiday.

Record Passenger Numbers and Network Expansion

On February 2, 2025, Cathay Pacific and HK Express set a new post-pandemic record, carrying over 111,000 passengers on a single day, highlighting the strong recovery in air travel demand. This milestone was a key indicator of the Group’s success in meeting rising passenger demand as the industry continues to recover globally.

The Cathay Group continues to make strides toward its goal of exceeding 100 passenger destinations worldwide by the end of 2025.

Cathay Pacific has already announced new international flights to Hyderabad, which will launch at the end of March 2025, and a non-stop service to Urumqi beginning on April 28, 2025. Meanwhile, HK Express, the Group’s low-cost carrier, has unveiled several new routes, including services to Komatsu starting on April 24, Cheongju on June 5, Daegu on June 6, and Miyako (Shimojishima) on June 27, 2025.

These additions represent a part of the Group’s broader strategy to enhance its connectivity and cater to increasing travel demand.

Cathay Pacific’s February 2025 Performance

Cathay Pacific has experienced significant growth in passenger traffic, carrying 14.3% more passengers in February 2025 compared to the same month in 2024.

The airline’s Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs) rose by 17%, indicating the Group’s ability to optimize capacity in response to increasing demand. In the first two months of 2025, Cathay Pacific saw a 25.4% increase in the number of passengers carried, compared to the same period in 2024.

Lavinia Lau noted that following the Lunar New Year holiday, leisure travel demand softened slightly, but business travel saw a resurgence, particularly due to various exhibitions and trade events held in late February and early March.

The airline saw strong load factors in its premium cabins as business travel demand continued to rise. Looking ahead, Cathay Pacific expects reduced leisure travel demand until the end of March but remains optimistic about leveraging its global network to attract more transit passengers.

HK Express Growth Continues

HK Express also had a standout month in February, carrying over 585,000 passengers, marking a 32% year-on-year increase.

The airline’s Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs) grew by 38%, and it has seen a 39.1% rise in passengers carried in the first two months of 2025.

This growth is a result of both the return of leisure travel after the Lunar New Year holiday and the airline’s strategic network expansion. HK Express plans to continue this growth trajectory with new destinations set to launch in April, including Nha Trang, Ishigaki, and Komatsu.

Outlook for the Future

With a strong start to 2025, the Cathay Group is well-positioned to continue its expansion plans and reach its goal of more than 100 destinations by the end of the year.

The Group’s commitment to improving both its premium and low-cost offerings, alongside its focus on strategic growth in key markets, ensures that it remains a leading player in the competitive global airline industry.

As the Group moves forward, the focus will be on maintaining a strong network, boosting passenger traffic, and expanding to new destinations that align with emerging travel trends.
