Caribbean Tourism Organization hosts a groundbreaking virtual forum for World Tourism Day 2024, highlighting tourism’s role in promoting peace and sustainability.

The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) will host a virtual forum on Friday, September 27, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. ET/AT, celebrating World Tourism Day. The event, themed “Resilience and Renewal: Building a Peaceful Future,” aligns with the United Nations’ global focus on “Tourism and Peace.”

Bringing together industry leaders, academics, and regional and international partners, the forum will explore tourism’s role in promoting peace, understanding, and sustainable development across the Caribbean. Participants will engage in critical discussions on how tourism can serve as a catalyst for peace-building and crisis recovery, essential for a region frequently impacted by natural disasters and global challenges. Strengthening resilience and enhancing crisis management strategies are key to ensuring tourism’s positive influence on community well-being.

Timothy Marshall, Chairman of the International Institute for Peace Through Tourism (IIPT), will deliver the keynote address, with remarks from CTO Secretary-General & CEO Dona Regis-Prosper, CTO Chairman Ian Gooding-Edghill, Sanovnik Destang, President of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), and Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary General of UN Tourism.

Key sessions will feature thought leaders in tourism and sustainability. John Byles, Executive Deputy Chairman of Chukka Caribbean Adventures, will discuss crisis communication and management, with case studies on Hurricane Beryl’s impact and recovery efforts by Faylene King, Director of Tourism for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Adrian Thomas, Minister of Tourism, Grenada. Aljoscha Wothke from the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Tobago will address gender equity and empowerment through regenerative tourism, while Lori Ann Pollard will focus on voluntourism’s role in fostering peace and resilience.

Youth perspectives will also be highlighted, with Keyana Warner, 2024 Tropical Shipping Regional Tourism Youth Congress winner and Junior Minister of Tourism from Nevis, sharing insights on empowering future generations through tourism.
