The Canadian government is investing over $13.4 million to transform the Sunshine Coast with the creation of the Pender Harbour Ocean Discovery Station (PODS), a state-of-the-art net-zero facility. This project is a collaboration between the Loon Foundation and the shíshálh Nation, combining shíshálh traditional knowledge, western science, and local culture to promote environmental stewardship and celebrate the region’s rich biodiversity.

Member of Parliament Patrick Weiler, representing West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast—Sea to Sky Country, made the funding announcement alongside Dr. Michael Jackson, Executive Director of the Loon Foundation, and Chief Lenora Joe (lhe hiwus) of the shíshálh Nation.

Set to open in Spring 2027, the new PODS facility will showcase cutting-edge green building technology and serve as a model of sustainability and accessibility. The facility will feature interactive exhibits, laboratories, galleries, and performance spaces, creating a vibrant hub for aquatic research, community engagement, and cultural programming. Through courses and public events, PODS aims to inspire environmental stewardship and deepen appreciation for the natural world.

The Loon Foundation has spent over 20 years enhancing biodiversity and fostering environmental stewardship on the Sunshine Coast. The shíshálh Nation, stewards of the swiya since time immemorial, sees PODS as a significant addition to their efforts. The facility will provide a space for community members and visitors of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to connect with immersive exhibits and activities that celebrate the region’s ecological and cultural heritage.

PODS is poised to drive local leadership in scientific research and regenerative tourism, strengthening the Sunshine Coast’s position as a leader in sustainability and cultural enrichment.
