In a strategic shift for summer 2025, British Airways (BA), via its BA CityFlyer branch, will cease operations from Southampton Airport on England’s southern coast.
Throughout the summer, BA CityFlyer operates weekend flights from Southampton to several destinations, including Bergerac, France; Faro, Portugal; and the Spanish cities of Malaga and Palma de Majorca. Additionally, during the winter season, the airline serves routes to Bergerac and Chambery, France.
Data from OAG Schedules Analyser for September 2024 indicates that BA holds a 3% market share at Southampton Airport, making it the seventh largest operator there. In contrast, EasyJet leads with 21.5%, followed by Blue Islands at 20.3% and Aer Lingus, another airline under BA’s umbrella, at 18.1%.
Current schedules reveal that BA is the only airline offering direct flights to Bergerac and Malaga. It faces competition from EasyJet on its Faro and Palma routes.
Conversely, Ryanair flies to all four cities from Bournemouth Airport nearby, where TUI Airways also offers flights to Palma. Furthermore, Jet2.com is set to establish a base at Bournemouth next summer with planned services to Faro and Palma.
This operational update from BA follows just a year after Southampton Airport extended its runway by 164 meters (538 feet). This extension at the northern end has enabled the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, such as the Boeing 737 or Airbus A320, fully loaded, a significant upgrade from the previously capable regional or crossover aircraft like ATR, De Havilland Canada turboprops, or Embraer E-Jets.
