Brazil's GOL

GOL Linhas Aéreas, the Brazilian carrier, is discontinuing its international route that connects the capitals of Colombia and Argentina, a service that commenced operations just under a year ago.

The service began on March 31, offering flights from São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport to El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá. It expanded the following day to include a segment from Bogotá to Buenos Aires Ezeiza International Airport. Initially set at four flights per week using Boeing 737-8 planes, the frequency increased to daily flights by July.

Despite the initial expansion, GOL announced in October the termination of the São Paulo to Bogotá portion starting December 8. Furthermore, GOL plans to cease the Bogotá to Buenos Aires operation by February 3, 2025, as per the latest filings with OAG Schedules Analyser.

With GOL’s exit, Avianca and Aerolíneas Argentinas will remain the primary carriers on these routes. Avianca runs 17 weekly flights between Bogotá and Buenos Aires Ezeiza, while Aerolíneas Argentinas offers a daily service to Buenos Aires Aeroparque Jorge Newbery.

GOL is not completely withdrawing from Bogotá; it aims to introduce a new route from Brasilia starting February 4, 2025, with three weekly round trips using the same 737-8 aircraft.

In a strategic move earlier this month, GOL’s parent entity, Abra Group—which also encompasses Avianca—converted $950 million of GOL’s secured debt into equity to facilitate the Brazilian airline’s emergence from U.S. Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The restructuring plan includes dissolving up to $1.7 billion in pre-bankruptcy debt and an additional $850 million in other financial commitments.

For November 2024, GOL has planned about 3.13 million seats across its network, reaching 81% of its operational capacity compared to pre-COVID-19 levels, with 94% of its flights serving domestic routes within Brazil.
