Borgo Pignano, nestled in the heart of Tuscany’s Volterra, is proud to announce its Green Globe recertification, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to sustainability. This five-star luxury retreat, set amidst a sprawling 750-acre organic estate, continues to offer guests an unforgettable experience with sustainability woven into every aspect of its operation.
The stunning 18th-century Villa, along with its surrounding maisonettes and villas, has been lovingly restored with locally sourced, sustainable materials. Notably, the hotel’s renowned infinity pool was carved from an ancient limestone quarry, whose stone was used to construct Volterra’s Porta dell’Arco, one of its key historical landmarks. The estate’s focus on preserving biodiversity remains central, with practices such as organic farming, beekeeping, and supporting local employment—over 80% of the staff come from the surrounding areas. Borgo Pignano’s farm was also certified as a fully organic agricultural estate by the Institute for Ethical and Environmental Certification, demonstrating its strict adherence to EU organic farming standards.
A major sustainability highlight is that 100% of the estate’s heating and hot water needs are met by woodchip-fired boilers, fueled by timber sourced from the estate’s own forests. The property’s irrigation system relies on harvested rainwater and natural lakes, while wastewater is purified through two phytoremediation systems for use in garden irrigation. Guests arriving by car can also charge their electric vehicles at one of the estate’s 8 EV charging stations.
As part of its ongoing commitment to reducing its environmental footprint, Borgo Pignano introduced a ‘Carbon Offsetting Project’ last year to tackle its scope 1, 2, and 3 CO2 emissions. The hotel has set an ambitious goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2030, offsetting all non-reducible greenhouse gas emissions along the way.
But sustainability at Borgo Pignano goes beyond infrastructure. The hotel offers guests an array of immersive, eco-friendly experiences, including dining at its Green Michelin star restaurant, truffle hunting, and participating in on-site sustainable farming activities. Guests can craft their own soaps and toiletries using herbs grown organically on the estate, or make traditional pasta from ancient grains grown with sustainable farming methods. These hands-on activities highlight the hotel’s mission to inspire guests to embrace a more natural, sustainable way of living.
Borgo Pignano’s Green Globe recertification underscores its dedication to both luxurious and sustainable travel. To further track its environmental impact, the estate will begin publishing an annual sustainability report starting in 2025, ensuring transparency and ongoing progress in its mission to preserve the beauty of Volterra for generations to come.
