The UK Foreign Office warns British tourists traveling to Bolivia due to deadly bus accidents and serious safety concerns regarding public transportation.

The UK Foreign Office has issued a travel advisory to British nationals planning to visit Bolivia, following a series of fatal accidents involving the country’s public transportation.

The latest warning highlights serious concerns over the safety of bus travel, particularly long-distance services. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has cautioned that British tourists have been involved in accidents due to the lack of safety features on buses and hazardous road conditions, including routes without guardrails.

Reports have surfaced of criminals boarding buses with the intent to rob passengers, adding to the dangers. With approximately 1,400 fatalities annually due to road accidents in Bolivia, the country has become notorious for its deadly traffic incidents.

In addition, the FCDO has pointed out that Bolivian public transport may not meet the safety standards that British tourists are accustomed to, with bus drivers often working long shifts that would be prohibited in Europe.

Recently, a tragic collision in southern Bolivia claimed the lives of at least 31 people, following another fatal crash just days earlier. On March 3, a bus plunged down a ravine after a collision on the highway between Oruro and the mining city of Potosí. This occurred just two days after another fatal crash near the popular tourist destination of Uyuni, which killed over 30 people.

The repeated fatalities underline the lack of basic safety infrastructure on many buses. The FCDO’s advisory strongly encourages travelers to prioritize their safety over cost when booking transportation in Bolivia and to thoroughly research their travel options before departing.
