Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar will launch direct flights to Abu Dhabi in June, enhancing Odisha’s global connectivity and boosting India-UAE travel.
New Direct Flight from Bhubaneswar to Abu Dhabi Enhances Global Connectivity
In June 2025, Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar will introduce a direct flight to Abu Dhabi, further strengthening Odisha’s international connectivity. This new route expands the city’s network of international destinations to include Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, and Abu Dhabi, providing travelers more options for global travel.
Strong Demand for Gulf Travel
Since its inception in May 2023, the Bhubaneswar-Dubai route has consistently seen full bookings, highlighting the growing demand for travel to the Middle East. With this success, the new Abu Dhabi route is expected to follow a similar pattern, further reinforcing the need for Gulf-based connectivity.
Connecting Odisha to Europe, North America, and Canada
The new direct link to Abu Dhabi, combined with the Dubai connection, offers travelers easier access to Europe, North America, and Canada, with just one stopover. This milestone significantly improves international travel opportunities for passengers from Odisha.
Expanding Domestic Travel Options
The Odisha government is also focusing on enhancing domestic air connectivity. Starting in April 2025, Bhubaneswar will have direct flights to Ghaziabad (Hindon), Port Blair, and Goa. These additions will bring the total number of domestic destinations served by BPIA to 28, with 56 daily departures and arrivals.
Growth in Passenger Traffic at BPIA
BPIA saw a notable 26.9% increase in passenger traffic in 2024 compared to the previous year. Despite this positive growth, the airport narrowly missed its goal of reaching five million annual passengers, signaling continued potential for further growth.
Jharsuguda’s Growing Air Connectivity
Beyond Bhubaneswar, Odisha is improving regional travel options. On March 1, 2025, IndiGo launched a daily direct flight between Jharsuguda and Mumbai. This new service is expected to improve business and economic ties while addressing the demand for better air connectivity between western Odisha and major metro cities.
Positioning Odisha as a Key Aviation Hub
With the addition of new international and domestic routes, Odisha is gradually becoming an important aviation hub in India. These developments will improve travel convenience, stimulate economic growth, and boost the state’s position in the national and global aviation network.
