Four Uttarakhand villages were honored with the Best Tourism Village 2024 award for their outstanding contributions to adventure, agricultural, and vibrant tourism.
On World Tourism Day, four villages from Uttarakhand were honored with the prestigious Best Tourism Village 2024 award at a ceremony in Delhi, organized by the Union Ministry of Tourism. Tourism Secretary Sachin Kurve, along with representatives from the awarded villages, received the accolades.
Jakhol village in Uttarkashi district won the award for Best Village in Adventure Tourism, while Supi in Bageshwar was recognized for Agricultural Tourism. Additionally, Gunji in Pithoragarh and Harshil in Uttarkashi were celebrated in the Vibrant Village category.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami lauded the awards as a “major achievement,” emphasizing that the hard work of authorities and locals is gaining national recognition. He noted that homestays and specialized activities are being promoted to “create job opportunities for the youth” within these villages.
In Jakhol, young locals actively engage in adventure tourism, particularly trekking. The village is a base for popular treks such as Kedarkantha and the Gangotri Glacier. Strict adherence to rules set by the forest and tourism departments ensures environmental conservation. Villagers avoid the use of plastic, and a waste collection committee, supported by both villagers and tourists, manages trash found along trekking routes.
Supi earned its recognition for agricultural tourism, situated near the Saryu River. The village features seven homestays and offers visitors the unique opportunity to participate in farming activities. Recently, the village has become a draw for foreign tourists attracted to its rich cultural heritage.
Harshil and Gunji were awarded for their vibrant tourism efforts. Harshil promotes tourism through local treks such as Lamatop and Kyarakote, organized by the village council. In Gunji, several homestays operate under the state’s Home Stay Scheme, further enhancing local tourism initiatives.
