Belmar Ecolodge

The Belmar Ecolodge in Costa Rica extends a unique invitation to artists worldwide to participate in a three-week Artist Residency Program this March, set against the stunning backdrop of the Monteverde Cloud Forest. The program, which occurs quarterly, offers participating artists accommodations, meals, and potentially a stipend depending on financial necessity.

Both local and international artists from various disciplines are welcome to engage in this environmentally conscious initiative at the boutique hotel, which has been fostering artistic development since 2019. The residency aims to enhance the creative paths of artists while enriching the experiences of hotel guests, employees, and the surrounding community, thereby integrating cultural elements into the travel experience and deepening the appreciation for Monteverde.

Pedro Belmar, Managing Director at Hotel Belmar, said, “During their stay, artists are encouraged to interact with guests and the local community. This interaction can take the form of open studio hours, where visitors can observe works in progress, as well as workshops and an art exhibition to showcase their creations. These conditions foster dialogue and cultural exchange, making the residency a shared and enriching experience for all involved.”

Belmar’s prior artistic endeavors in New York City, including a collaboration with MoMA, have influenced his dedication to the arts, leading to the inception of this residency. The program is co-founded with Martha Palacio, a noted Costa Rican artist, curator, and musician, reflecting the hotel’s commitment to sustainable tourism and cultural and environmental consciousness.

The residency has welcomed a diverse group of artists, including international figures like Emilia Olsen, Damian Siqueiros, Cocquelicot Mafille, Bjorn Jelinek, and Patrick Neal, as well as Costa Rican talents such as painter Fabian Monge, kinetic sculptor Jonathan Torres, and the Wimblu art collective.

Visitors at Hotel Belmar enjoy the serene environment of Monteverde’s cloud forest, with activities designed to inspire, such as guided nature walks, forest immersion, sustainable farming at Finca Madre Tierra, morning yoga, and other creatively stimulating experiences.
