Belize

Belize’s tourism industry achieved a historic milestone in 2024, witnessing a significant surge in overnight, land-based visitors. The Central American destination welcomed an impressive 562,405 travelers throughout the year, marking a robust 21% year-over-year increase from 2023 and an 11.8% rise compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to preliminary data from the Belize Tourism Board (BTB).

Record-Breaking Arrival Numbers

Tourism officials reported that 2024 saw record-breaking numbers in 11 out of the 12 months when compared to 2019. March stood out as the peak month for overnight arrivals, with 69,202 visitors choosing Belize as their travel destination. This growth underscores Belize’s increasing appeal among international travelers, particularly those seeking diverse cultural experiences, pristine beaches, and eco-tourism adventures.

Strong Air Connectivity Fuels Growth

The substantial rise in overnight visitors can be attributed in part to the growing air connectivity between Belize and major U.S. hubs. The country is currently served by multiple airlines, including American Airlines flights from Miami and Dallas, United Airlines connections from Houston, Delta Air Lines service from Atlanta, and JetBlue Airways along with United Airlines and Delta Air Lines offering flights from New York. These routes have facilitated seamless access for North American travelers, further boosting the country’s tourism sector.

Mixed Results for the Cruise Tourism Sector

While Belize’s land-based tourism flourished in 2024, the cruise sector experienced a slight decline. According to BTB statistics, 764,993 cruise passengers arrived in Belize through November, reflecting a modest 1.6% decrease from the 777,626 visitors recorded during the same period in 2023. Despite this dip, the cruise industry has managed to recover 73.1% of its pre-pandemic visitor numbers from 2019, indicating a steady resurgence in maritime travel.

Belize’s Ongoing Tourism Momentum

The surge in overnight arrivals demonstrates Belize’s resilience and growing reputation as a top-tier travel destination. With ongoing marketing efforts, strategic airline partnerships, and a focus on sustainable tourism, the country is well-positioned to build on this momentum and continue attracting visitors from around the globe in the years ahead. As Belize continues to invest in its tourism infrastructure, the potential for further growth remains promising.
