Destination Canada has announced the launch of the Northern Sky Corridor, an exciting tourism initiative aimed at connecting travelers with Indigenous culture and experiences along a route from Edmonton to Yellowknife. The program, part of Destination Canada’s broader Tourism Corridor Strategy Program, was revealed in a news release on September 26, 2024.

Following a successful pilot, the Northern Sky Corridor is one of three tourism corridor programs designed to stimulate travel across Canada. The project will invite both international and domestic tourists to explore the natural beauty, art, history, and rich Indigenous culture of Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

Paul Hawes, vice-president of destination development and marketing at Explore Edmonton, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “Edmonton has always had a special connection to the Northwest Territories, and we are delighted to collaborate on the Northern Sky Corridor. This route offers international and domestic travelers a chance to experience the diverse heritage, landscapes, and Indigenous culture that define our region.”

The Northern Sky Corridor is expected to generate significant economic impact, with projections estimating a value of $166.9 million over the next five years. Destination Canada’s 2023 Global Traveller Research Program revealed that nearly 70 percent of foreign visitors to Canada expressed strong interest in experiencing Indigenous cultural activities. Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi also expressed excitement about the initiative, saying, “This project builds on our city’s connections to Northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories, celebrating the vibrant culture and natural beauty of the region.”
