Spirit Airlines is set to expand its operations at Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) this spring, introducing six new and returning nonstop routes. By May, travelers from the Romulus hub will have access to Baltimore, Charlotte, Memphis, Pensacola, Raleigh-Durham, and San Antonio, further strengthening Spirit’s service network. This expansion will increase the airline’s DTW service to 25 destinations with 34 peak-day departures.

Starting May 8, Spirit will resume service to Baltimore four times a week. The airline will also launch new routes to Charlotte and Memphis, each operating four times per week, while flights to Raleigh-Durham will resume twice a week.

On May 9, service to Pensacola will return with three weekly flights, and a new route to San Antonio will launch with twice-weekly service.

Spirit Airlines has maintained a presence at DTW for more than three decades, offering both premium and economy travel options. Tickets for the new routes are now available for booking on Spirit’s website.

Financial Challenges and Industry Shifts

The airline’s expansion announcement comes amid financial restructuring efforts. Spirit recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as it navigates financial difficulties, including losses exceeding $2.5 billion since 2020 and upcoming debt payments surpassing $1 billion in 2025 and 2026.

Earlier merger attempts with other carriers have faced regulatory hurdles. A proposed acquisition by JetBlue was blocked by a federal judge over concerns about reduced competition and increased fares. More recently, Frontier Airlines’ parent company has put forward a new offer, involving newly issued debt and common stock.

Despite financial headwinds, Spirit Airlines continues to expand its route network, reinforcing its commitment to providing affordable travel options for Detroit passengers.
