Austrian Airlines

Austrian Airlines has launched its inaugural direct flights between Edinburgh and Vienna, marking a significant expansion in connectivity for Scotland’s busiest airport. Starting this summer, the airline will operate three weekly services, providing travelers with a convenient and seamless link to one of Europe’s most culturally rich capitals.

The flights, scheduled on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, will be operated using the modern Airbus A320 aircraft. This new route is set to run from early June through the end of September, offering passengers ample opportunities to explore Vienna’s renowned musical heritage and historic charm or to enjoy Edinburgh’s vibrant cultural scene.

This new service enhances Edinburgh Airport’s role within the growing VINCI Airports Network, strengthening its position as a key gateway between the UK and continental Europe. It also underscores the increasing demand for travel between these two iconic cities, both celebrated for their unique blend of history, architecture, and artistic influence.

Edinburgh’s allure as a travel destination is well-known, attracting visitors with its majestic castles, world-famous festivals, and rich literary and musical traditions. Likewise, Vienna stands out as a city of classical music and imperial grandeur, offering tourists an inspiring experience with its palaces, museums, and coffeehouse culture.

The introduction of Austrian Airlines flights between these destinations provides a valuable new option for leisure travelers, business visitors, and cultural enthusiasts alike. Beyond the city centers, the route also presents a strategic starting point for exploring the diverse landscapes of Scotland—from the historic Lowlands to the rugged Highlands—with their cooler summer climate and scenic beauty.

This new connection responds to a growing trend among Austrian travelers seeking summer holidays in cooler, less crowded destinations. Edinburgh’s moderate temperatures, refreshing sea breezes, and distinctive weather patterns make it an appealing alternative to more traditional southern European resorts.

With the early bookings indicating strong interest, the route is poised to become a popular choice during the summer months. Passengers will benefit from the convenience of direct flights, modern onboard amenities, and the opportunity to experience two of Europe’s most enchanting capitals in a single trip.

This development highlights Austrian Airlines’ ongoing commitment to expanding its route network with new destinations that meet evolving traveler preferences. The airline continues to adapt its summer schedules to provide diverse options that cater to both leisure and business travel needs.

The introduction of direct flights connecting Edinburgh and Vienna significantly enhances travel options, bringing together two cities rich in culture and history while promoting tourism, commercial ties, and cultural exchange. It represents a win-win for both airports and their respective regions, opening new doors for exploration, economic growth, and international connectivity throughout the summer season and beyond.

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport said:

“We’re pleased to welcome Austrian Airlines to Edinburgh Airport and to add another fantastic airline partner to our network.

“It’s a brilliant link between two beautiful capital cities – each with its own rich culture, proud heritage, and love of a good tune.

“We look forward to seeing passengers take full advantage of this exciting new connection throughout the summer.”

Annette Mann, Chief Executive Officer of Austrian Airlines said:

“Austrian Airlines remains committed to continuously expanding its route network with new destinations in the summer schedule 2025. We see a continuing trend in Austria to look for summer holiday destinations in cooler climes.

“From 3 June to 27 September 2025, the red-white-red airline will fly from Vienna to the Scottish capital Edinburgh every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

“Edinburgh is a tip for all city trip fans and offers an attractive and fun mix of history, culture, architecture, and festivals, as well as a lively and colourful pub scene. For those with a bit more time, it is the ideal and uncomplicated starting point for tours in the Low, Mid, or even Highlands – all with moderate temperatures, a cool sea breeze, and the occasional typical rain shower even in high summer. The advance bookings make us very optimistic that we see a successful summer.”
