The Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) is creating fresh opportunities for Australian wineries to connect with Indian wine lovers and industry leaders at ProWine Mumbai 2024. With a growing appetite among Indian consumers for premium and diverse wine experiences, this event serves as a strategic platform for Australian wine producers to deepen their footprint in the vibrant Indian market. The collaboration highlights the expanding demand for high-quality international wines in India and reinforces Australia’s commitment to sharing its world-renowned wine culture with Indian connoisseurs and industry stakeholders.
Organized by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) in collaboration with Global Victoria, Investment NSW, and Wine Australia, the Australian pavilion at ProWine Mumbai features an impressive lineup of 11 wineries. Each winery brings a curated selection of premium wines that reflect Australia’s rich viticultural heritage and innovative wine-making techniques, from bold reds to crisp whites. This initiative showcases the nation’s wine diversity, appealing to Indian importers, distributors, and consumers eager to explore Australian flavors.
The wineries’ participation emphasizes their commitment to meeting the evolving preferences of India’s sophisticated wine market. To enhance the tasting experience, two exclusive masterclasses are scheduled, led by renowned Sommelier Nikhil Agarwal. These sessions offer attendees an in-depth understanding of Australia’s wine regions and varietals, with one masterclass proudly hosted by the South Australian Government, further highlighting the state’s significant contribution to the industry.
From introducing new flavors to building lasting business relationships, ProWine Mumbai 2024 marks a promising chapter in the Australia-India wine trade. Australian wineries are keen to elevate wine culture in India, supporting the growing interest in premium international wines and paving the way for long-term growth in this flourishing market.
Speaking about the Australian participation, Mr John Southwell, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner – South Asia, Australian Trade and Investment Commission said, “The spirit of cooperation between India and Australia drives our desire to work closely with Indian importers and provide Australia’s finest wines to India, promoting economic ties that further unite the two countries. This includes engaging in technical cooperation to promote the further growth of the Indian wine industry. We are excited to honour this close relationship by showcasing a variety of Australian wines at ProWine Mumbai.”
Australia, renowned for its richly diverse wine culture, is making waves in India with wines that capture the essence of the nation’s unique climates, soils, and the dedication of its winemaking communities. With over 100 grape varieties cultivated across 65 distinctive wine regions, Australian wine represents a spectrum of flavors – from refined reds to lively, fruity whites. Indian wine enthusiasts now have greater access to these dynamic wines, perfect for pairing with India’s wide-ranging culinary heritage.
Australia’s influence on the global wine industry is significant. Ranking as the sixth-largest wine producer and fifth-largest exporter globally, the country sends about 60% of its wine production abroad. This stature is now reinforced by the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which took effect on December 29, 2022. This agreement provides a phased reduction in tariffs, presenting an opportunity for Indian consumers to explore premium Australian wines at more accessible prices.
Under the ECTA, wines priced between US$5 and US$15 per bottle will see a gradual reduction in tariffs from 150% to 50% over nine years. Additionally, tariffs on wines valued over US$15 per bottle will decrease to 25% over the same period. This shift allows a broader range of Australian wines to enter the Indian market, catering to both casual and discerning consumers who seek quality and variety.
With the diversity of Indian cuisine offering ample opportunities for pairing, Australian wines are uniquely suited to elevate dining experiences in India. From spicy curries to rich, savory dishes, Australian wines provide a versatile complement, amplifying the flavors of Indian meals. The ECTA’s provisions promise a deeper exchange of flavors and cultures, strengthening the connection between Australia’s innovative wine industry and India’s evolving wine market.
