Amtrak and Google have partnered to offer travelers more sustainable transportation options when searching for intercity travel. With this new data integration, users can now find real-time Amtrak departure times, trip durations, and fares directly on Google Search results. Once a train is selected, customers can seamlessly proceed to complete their booking without needing to re-enter trip details.
Amtrak details will appear when users explore rail travel between two destinations, and Google will also suggest trains when travelers search for flights. This feature encourages more sustainable choices by making train travel an accessible alternative. More details are available on Google’s blog.
“One of the biggest impacts we can make towards climate change is shifting the way people get around,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris. “As we continue offering services that motivate people to shift out of cars and planes into trains, we are thrilled that this integration makes it even easier for users to find rail options for their travel needs while also potentially lowering their carbon emissions.”
By opting for Amtrak instead of flying, customers can lower their carbon footprint by up to 72%. As Amtrak looks ahead, the U.S. has a unique opportunity to leverage its extensive railway infrastructure—the largest globally by mileage—to expand a network of low-carbon, high-capacity intercity rail routes that can positively impact the economy and create opportunities for travelers and workers.
Amtrak has also set a goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its network by 2045, focusing on minimizing environmental impacts while ensuring safe transportation for passengers.
