Amtrak has named Byl Herrmann as its new Executive Vice President and General Counsel. In this role, Herrmann will lead the development of the department’s long-term strategic vision, establish key priorities, and oversee the annual operating plan, all aligned with Amtrak’s broader strategic and corporate goals.
“Byl has helped guide the evolution of Amtrak’s Law department and corporate development over many decades and brings a comprehensive and deep knowledge of all facets of the company,” said Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner. “He’s the right person to help lead the company forward as we build a new era of rail in the United States, building upon the strong legacy set by his predecessor, Eldie Acheson.”
Herrmann, who joined Amtrak’s Law Department in 1999, has spent the past 25 years excelling in various roles of increasing responsibility. His career includes a year as Vice President of Human Resources. In his most recent position as Vice President, Senior Managing Deputy General Counsel, and Assistant Corporate Secretary, Herrmann has overseen litigation, corporate transactions, legal compliance, and the Corporate Secretary’s office.
He will succeed Eldie Acheson, who has served as Amtrak’s General Counsel, Chief Legal Officer, and Corporate Secretary since 2007, effective October 1. Acheson will continue with Amtrak in her roles as Corporate Secretary and Ethics Officer through January 2025, with Herrmann set to assume those responsibilities in February 2025.
