Alstom, a global pioneer in smart and sustainable transportation solutions, has successfully delivered the Manila Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension, which commenced revenue service on November 16, 2024. The extension was formally inaugurated on November 15 by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., alongside officials from the Department of Transportation and representatives from Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC). This achievement marks Alstom’s first fully integrated metro system project in the Philippines, executed as part of a consortium led by Bouygues Travaux Publics.
Phase 1 of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension expands the existing line by 6.2 kilometers, introducing five new stations: Redemptorist-ASEANA, Manila International Airport Road, Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), Ninoy Aquino Avenue, and Dr. Santos (previously known as Sucat). Once fully operational, the extension is expected to accommodate up to 400,000 daily passengers, significantly cutting travel time between Baclaran, Pasay City, and Bacoor, Cavite, from 70 minutes to just 25 minutes.
Alstom’s responsibilities encompassed end-to-end project engineering and the integration of an advanced electromechanical railway system. This included modern signalling technology adhering to ETCS Level 1 standards, state-of-the-art telecommunications, track works, power supply systems, and the installation of overhead catenary systems.
“We are delighted to contribute to enhancing Manila’s transportation infrastructure,” said Toby Tiberghien, Managing Director, East Asia, Alstom. “By providing a faster and more efficient alternative to road travel, this project not only improves connectivity across the city but also supports sustainable and reliable public transportation options for its citizens.”
In 2022, Alstom successfully upgraded the 20-kilometer LRT-1 trackside signaling system using its advanced Atlas 100 solution, significantly improving the network’s operational efficiency and safety. Additionally, the company installed state-of-the-art onboard signaling equipment across the entire fleet of 60 trains, spanning four generations of rolling stock.
This milestone project, which involved revamping and extending the LRT-1 line, highlights Alstom’s dedication to advancing the Philippines’ railway infrastructure. Through innovative and sustainable mobility solutions, the company aims to improve the daily transportation experience for Filipinos while contributing to the nation’s economic development.
With over five decades of expertise and more than 90 systems operating globally, Alstom stands as a trusted leader in delivering comprehensive rail solutions designed to meet diverse mobility needs.
