Vlora Airport Targets Spring 2025 Launch Amid Tight Timeline for Traffic Control Systems.

Vlora Airport (Aeroporti i Vlorës) is gearing up for its highly anticipated spring 2025 launch, even as critical air traffic control system installations present a tight deadline of eight months. The ambitious project, spearheaded by Albcontrol, is progressing steadily, with preparations for operational readiness currently underway.

As of December 2024, Albcontrol has initiated infrastructure groundwork for the airport. The procurement process is actively in motion to secure vital air traffic control systems, ensuring efficient operations upon completion.

Key Highlights:

  • Budget: Approximately 39.7 million lekë allocated for procurement.
  • Systems to be Installed: Voice Communication Systems (VCS) and Voice Communication Recorders (VCR).
  • Installation Timeline: Estimated to take up to 8 months.

Construction of Vlora Airport began in late 2021, aiming to accommodate up to 2 million passengers annually in its initial phase. Future expansions will enhance the facility with a dedicated cargo terminal, an enlarged passenger terminal, and a flight academy, further solidifying its role as a vital transportation hub.

The race against time continues as Albcontrol and stakeholders work to ensure that all systems are operational by the targeted launch date. The success of this project will mark a significant milestone in Albania’s aviation sector.

Vlora Airport (Aeroporti i Vlorës) spans an impressive 309 hectares and boasts a 3.2-kilometer runway specifically designed to handle wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A330-340 and Boeing 777. Complementing the runway is a parallel taxiway of the same length, ensuring smooth and efficient aircraft operations within the maneuvering zone.

Bold Ambitions Meet Environmental Challenges
The anticipated boost to the local economy and tourism is significant, particularly for Albania’s southern regions, positioning Vlora Airport as a transformative project.

However, the grand vision has sparked controversy. Environmental groups question whether the promised benefits justify the ecological risks. The government has yet to convincingly explain the selection of this location, especially given its proximity to Tirana Airport.

Situated within the protected Narta Lagoon, the airport’s location has drawn sharp criticism from conservationists. They claim the project breaches national laws and international agreements to which Albania is a party. The lagoon serves as a vital habitat for migratory birds, including the endangered Dalmatian pelican. Environmentalists also raise alarms about the heightened risk of bird strikes, which could pose serious safety concerns for aircraft and wildlife alike.

With an investment of €104 million, this project aims to invigorate Vlora’s region, particularly its tourism industry. Officials envision the airport as the “southern air gateway,” positioning it as a vital strategic hub for the area’s growth.

Despite the ambitious plans, doubts remain. The airport is set to begin operations at limited capacity, while the installation of critical systems faces a tight schedule. Will these lofty promises soar as expected, or could unforeseen delays send the project into uncertain territory?
