Malaysia has secured its place as one of the top 10 retirement destinations for 2025, ranking seventh in the prestigious Annual Global Retirement Index by International Living. The Ireland-based publication recently unveiled its list, evaluating 20 countries on essential criteria such as cost of living, healthcare, visa options, climate, governance, and lifestyle.

Among Southeast Asian nations, Malaysia and Thailand stood out, with Thailand securing the tenth position. Malaysia’s ranking highlights its strong appeal to foreign retirees, offering an ideal balance of affordability, excellent infrastructure, and vibrant culture.

The report praises Malaysia’s rare combination of low living costs, high-quality healthcare, and a rich cultural environment. In the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, rental prices are notably affordable, with one-bedroom apartments typically available for US$300 to US$500 per month. Utilities add another US$40 to US$60 to the monthly cost, making it a budget-friendly choice for retirees. Dining out is also inexpensive, with local meals available for just US$2 to US$3.

Other cities like Penang and Malacca offer even lower living costs and a more relaxed atmosphere, making them attractive for those seeking a quieter retirement lifestyle.

Malaysia’s tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius year-round, is another key factor that makes it an appealing destination. The country’s modern amenities and widespread use of English further enhance its suitability for retirees seeking a smooth transition.

In addition, Malaysia’s long-term visa options, including the “Malaysia My Second Home” (MM2H) programme, are beneficial for retirees looking to settle in the country for extended periods.

Other countries that made it to the top 10 include Panama, Portugal, Costa Rica, Mexico, France, Spain, Greece, and Italy.
