A Delta Air Lines flight from London Heathrow (LHR) to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) was unexpectedly diverted to Shannon Airport (SNN) in Ireland due to a mechanical malfunction. The Boeing 767-400 aircraft, carrying 129 passengers and crew members, made a safe emergency landing, and all individuals onboard disembarked without any harm.
The incident occurred when the flight deck window heat malfunctioned, prompting the flight crew to declare an emergency. In line with standard aviation procedures, the crew quickly reversed course and set a new heading towards Shannon, the nearest suitable airport.
The flight had taken off from London at 4:24 PM local time, with an anticipated arrival in New York at 9:23 PM ET. Upon identifying the issue, the crew’s swift response ensured the plane was safely redirected to Shannon, where emergency teams stood by, prepared for any eventuality. The aircraft landed smoothly, and no further complications arose.
Delta Airlines acknowledged the cooperation of passengers and expressed gratitude for their understanding during the situation. The airline emphasized that the crew adhered to all standard safety protocols, ensuring a secure outcome for everyone on board.
The aircraft, a 25.6-year-old Boeing 767-432(ER) powered by GE CF6 engines, was immediately inspected upon landing in Shannon. Maintenance crews worked diligently to address the mechanical issue and ensure the aircraft was ready to return to service.
Delta Airlines assisted passengers with alternative travel arrangements to New York, reaffirming that passenger safety remains the highest priority, despite the disruption to travel plans.
This event follows another emergency landing by Delta on February 12, 2025, when a flight from Detroit to Kansas City was diverted to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) after a smoky odor was detected in the cockpit. Delta reiterated its commitment to safety and continued to prioritize passenger well-being above all else.
