Bruce Smith Enterprise and The Cordish Companies have officially broken ground on the highly anticipated LIVE! CASINO & HOTEL VIRGINIA in Petersburg. This major development marks the beginning of a transformative project that is set to bring billions of dollars in economic growth, create thousands of jobs, and elevate the gaming, hospitality, and entertainment landscape in the Commonwealth. As part of a $1.4 billion master plan, Live! Casino & Hotel Virginia will be developed in phases and establish a premier mixed-use resort destination in Petersburg.
Key executives from Bruce Smith Enterprise, The Cordish Companies, and Cordish Gaming were joined by Petersburg City Mayor Sam Parham, members of the City Council, Virginia State Senator Lashrecse Aird, and Virginia State Delegate Kim Taylor, alongside numerous business and community leaders, at the groundbreaking ceremony. The project site, located at Brasfield Parkway and Wagner Road, with easy access to Interstate I-95, is just 20 miles south of Richmond, making it an ideal location for regional accessibility.

The Live! Casino & Hotel Virginia is scheduled to open in 2027. However, a temporary gaming facility will be operational by the end of 2025, providing approximately 500 new jobs, economic opportunities, and benefits to the city. Over the first decade, the project is projected to inject $2.8 billion in economic activity into the region, including $504 million in tax revenues, $240 million of which will directly benefit Petersburg. The development will create 7,500 jobs, with 6,100 during construction and 1,400 permanent positions upon completion.
When completed, the resort will feature:
- More than 450,000 square feet of top-tier gaming, hotel, and dining spaces
- A 75,000-square-foot convention, meeting, and entertainment venue, including a 4,000-seat facility for concerts and events with leading Virginia and regional talent
- A 200-room upscale hotel with 20 suites, a resort pool, and a fitness center
- 1,600 cutting-edge slot machines
- 65 live-action table games, featuring a 22-table poker room
- High-limit gaming areas for slots and tables
- A state-of-the-art sportsbook
- Ten premium dining and entertainment options, including local partners
- Free parking for guests
The temporary gaming facility, set to open by the end of 2025, will feature:
- 75,000 square feet of gaming space
- 900 state-of-the-art slot machines
- 33 live-action table games
- A casino bar and quick-service restaurant
- 1,000 free parking spaces
