Representatives from 59 countries gathered in Taipei for the 12th Smart City Summit & Expo (SCSE) and the 3rd Net-Zero City Expo, marking a significant milestone in Taiwan’s “Smart Nation 2.0” initiative. The event, hosted at the Nangang Exhibition Center, has transformed the venue into a global hub for mayors, tech experts, and industry leaders working together to shape the future of digitally advanced and environmentally sustainable cities.

SCSE Boosts Global Opportunities for Taiwan’s IoT Solutions
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Paul S.L. Peng, chairman of the Taipei Computer Association emphasized, that SCSE has become an internationally renowned event, attracting a rapidly growing number of overseas visitors. This year, 569 mayors and representatives are attending to further engage with Taiwanese cities and industries. Notably, a delegation from 11 Ukrainian cities is visiting the exhibition, and the organizers have arranged events such as “Rebuilding Ukraine with Taiwan: Innovation, Partnership, and Progress,” as well as international matchmaking sessions to explore how Taiwan’s ICT enterprises can assist Ukraine’s reconstruction through smart technology.

Peng also recognized the participation of delegations from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the United States, and Japan, as well as 83 tech and industry chambers. This year’s Global Business Matchmaking Event is focusing on four sectors: AI, IoT, smart transportation, and smart energy, with an estimated 1,000 business meetings planned to foster international collaboration.

Taiwan’s Government Launches “Smart Nation 2.0”

Deputy Minister Kao Shien-Quey announced the launch of Taiwan’s “Smart Nation 2.0” initiative, which seeks to position Taiwan as a global leader in smart technology and digital infrastructure. The program will focus on key areas such as smart transportation, healthcare, education, fintech, net-zero emissions, and urban development, with the aim of improving quality of life and establishing a robust digital society.

Cynthia Chen, Secretary-General of the Taiwan Smart City Solutions Alliance, shared that the event would also serve as a platform for several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), forging collaborations between cities, industries, and companies. Notable agreements include those between Taipei and Montgomery County, as well as partnerships with international entities like RECIA in Argentina and ROTA in Romania, reinforcing Taiwan’s role in global smart city development.

AI Innovations Highlighted at SCSE 2025

AI applications take center stage this year, with Taiwanese companies showcasing their pivotal role in the global AI hardware supply chain. The exhibition features cutting-edge AI applications across diverse industries, underscoring Taiwan’s growing influence in the technology sector. One major highlight is a partnership between Chunghwa Telecom and global tech giants, including NTT (Japan), Singtel (Singapore), and AIS (Thailand), to demonstrate advancements in all-optical networks, smart streetlights, and smart city technologies.

Local Governments Driving Digital and Net-Zero Transitions

Local governments have played a pivotal role in shaping the digital and net-zero transformation of Taiwan. Twelve Taiwanese cities, including Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, and Kaohsiung, have established themed pavilions to showcase their smart city achievements. Notably, the National Development Council will host the 3rd “Net Zero City Leaders Summit,” providing a platform for mayors and city leaders to discuss collaborative strategies for sustainable urban living.

The event’s significance is amplified as global attention focuses on climate change and the need for innovative solutions. The “2025 Taipei Smart City Summit” and “AI City: Empowering Future Urban Living” forums are expected to strengthen Taiwan’s partnerships worldwide and position it at the forefront of the smart and sustainable city movement.

With the SCSE running until March 21 at the Nangang Exhibition Center and extending to Kaohsiung from March 20-22, the event is a crucial meeting point for the future of urban innovation, sustainability, and technological advancement.
