Belfast is gearing up for its highly anticipated St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 17, 2025, a celebration of Irish heritage featuring vibrant costumes, music, dance, and theatrical performances. While the festivities promise a joyous occasion, the event also brings temporary road disruptions and changes to public transport.
Here’s everything you need to know to plan ahead for the day’s events.
Parade Route and Start Time
The St. Patrick’s Day parade in Belfast will begin at 1.30pm from Belfast City Hall. The parade will be led by Lord Mayor of Belfast, Micky Murray, and will travel through the city centre, taking the following route:
- Start at Belfast City Hall
- Travel down Chichester Street
- Turn left onto Victoria Street
- Turn left onto High Street
- Continue onto Castle Place
- Turn left into Donegall Place
- Return to Belfast City Hall
This route ensures plenty of opportunities for spectators to enjoy the festivities, with good viewing spots available along both sides of the streets. However, as with any major event, expect some delays and diversions during the parade.
Road Closures and Diversions
Rolling traffic diversions will be in effect from 12.30pm to 3.30pm to accommodate the parade and associated festivities. Areas affected by these diversions include:
- Donegall Square West
- College Square East and Wellington Place
- High Street (inner), Castle Place, Royal Avenue, and Donegall Place
- Victoria Street, Bridge Street, Chichester Street, and Ann Street
In addition, temporary road closures will be in place from 8am to 9pm in the Cathedral Quarter to allow for the St. Patrick’s Day Festival Village setup and dismantling. These closures will affect Academy Street (from the junction of Curtis Street) and Exchange Street West.
Parking Restrictions
To ensure smooth traffic flow during the event, no on-street parking will be allowed from 6am to 3pm along the parade route. This includes blue badge parking spaces on Donegall Place, High Street, and Bridge Street. It is recommended to use public transport or park further away from the city centre.
Public Transport Changes
Due to the parade and other St. Patrick’s Day events, public transport services will operate on holiday timetables throughout the day. Affected services include:
- Metro buses
- Glider service
- Ulsterbus services
- NI Railways
