A British tourist is missing after a tour boat caught fire near Koh Tao, Thailand. Authorities launched a search as rescue efforts were hampered by the blaze.
Thai authorities are searching for a British tourist who disappeared after a tour boat caught fire near Koh Tao, a famous diving spot, prompting a frantic rescue.
Alexandra Clarke, 26, from Lambeth, south London, was aboard the vessel Davy Jones Locker for a diving excursion when disaster struck. The fire reportedly broke out while she was in the bathroom, moments before the boat sent out a distress signal at 9:25 a.m. local time.
The vessel was carrying 21 others, including 15 tourists, two crew members, and four diving instructors and assistants. Private boats and volunteers quickly mobilized to rescue those onboard, successfully evacuating all but Clarke. Meanwhile, another group of volunteers fought to contain the blaze.
Efforts to search the boat were initially hampered by raging flames and fears of explosions due to fuel stored on the vessel. Despite this, Thai authorities launched an immediate search operation in the surrounding waters and along the nearby coastline.
As investigations continue, Clarke’s disappearance has left friends and family desperate for answers. The incident raises fresh concerns over maritime safety in Thailand’s bustling tourism sector, where boat accidents have been reported in the past.
Rescue teams remain hopeful as they expand their search efforts, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. The British Embassy in Bangkok has been notified and is in contact with Clarke’s family.
