Uzbekistan has officially become the 26th country to join the International Code for the Protection of Tourists (ICPT), reinforcing its commitment to enhancing legal protections for travelers and ensuring global tourism safety standards.

This move further aligns Uzbekistan with international efforts led by UN Tourism to establish a unified framework that safeguards tourist rights, particularly in emergency situations.

A Commitment to Tourist Protection and Safety

The ICPT, developed by UN Tourism, serves as a standardized legal framework aimed at ensuring traveler protection, consumer rights, and security in the tourism sector. By adhering to the code, Uzbekistan strengthens its legal guarantees for visitors, positioning itself as a safe, welcoming, and globally competitive travel destination.

Aziz Abdukhakimov, Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of Uzbekistan, emphasized the country’s dedication to improving its tourism infrastructure:

“Uzbekistan is committed to ensuring the highest standards of safety, security, and quality for all visitors. The International Code for the Protection of Tourists enhances travelers’ rights and strengthens trust in Uzbekistan as a reliable destination. Our alignment with these global principles will further support our vision of a modern, hospitable, and competitive tourism sector that benefits both visitors and local communities.”

Uzbekistan’s Leadership in International Tourism Standards

Uzbekistan has been a key player in developing international tourism regulations. In December 2024, the country was unanimously elected as the Chair of the Committee for the development of an International Safe Tourism Code, demonstrating its leadership in establishing best practices for global tourist protection.

As part of its broader tourism development strategy, Uzbekistan has worked closely with UN Tourism and other international organizations to ensure safer and more transparent travel regulations. The adoption of the ICPT further supports the government’s initiatives to attract more international tourists, strengthen crisis management systems, and enhance traveler rights during unforeseen circumstances such as health emergencies or trip disruptions.

UN Tourism Recognizes Uzbekistan’s Efforts

Alicia Gomez, Director of Legal Affairs and International Standards at UN Tourism, highlighted the importance of international cooperation in the tourism sector, stating:

“The global and interconnected nature of the tourism sector makes the harmonization of international standards even more vital. Both the ICPT and the future International Safe Tourism Code are invaluable tools in this endeavor.”

Future Outlook: Strengthening Uzbekistan’s Tourism Sector

With Uzbekistan’s rapidly growing tourism industry, the country continues to implement reforms aimed at boosting visitor confidence and ensuring seamless travel experiences. The nation has already introduced measures such as simplified visa policies, digital tourism services, and enhanced infrastructure, all of which align with international best practices.

By joining the International Code for the Protection of Tourists, Uzbekistan not only strengthens its reputation as a premier global travel destination but also reinforces its leadership in promoting international tourism standards. The country’s proactive approach to tourism governance sets a benchmark for other nations seeking to enhance legal protections for travelers, ensuring that global tourism remains safe, fair, and accessible for all.
