China’s railway passenger traffic hits a record 726 million in early 2025, driven by Spring Festival travel rush, fueling growth in tourism and service advancements.
China’s railway passenger traffic saw a significant 4.7% year-on-year increase, reaching a record-breaking 726 million trips in the first two months of 2025, according to the nation’s railway operator.
This surge was largely driven by the annual Spring Festival travel rush, which led to a marked increase in cross-regional movements. The China State Railway Group Co. Ltd. reported that the influx of students, workers, and tourists visiting family during this busy period contributed to the higher railway passenger volume.
To accommodate the rising demand, an average of 11,605 passenger trains were operated daily during this period, reflecting an 8.7% year-on-year rise in services.
Noteworthy improvements in railway services include the availability of convenient transfer options at 120 stations across the country, and 89 stations offering internet food-ordering services.
In terms of international travel, the China-Laos Railway carried 59,000 passengers during these two months, a remarkable 57.9% increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, the steady operations of the China-Mongolia and China-Russia international passenger trains have further enhanced cross-border exchanges and driven tourism growth.
