Hendrydh Falls in Wales offers breathtaking natural beauty, resembling Bali’s tropical vibes, and served as the iconic bat cave in The Dark Knight Rises.
Fans of Batman may recognize Hendrydh Falls as the location of the iconic bat cave in The Dark Knight Rises.
Nestled near a charming Welsh village, this stunning waterfall has been compared to the exotic waterfalls of Bali. Hendrydh Falls, the tallest waterfall in South Wales, plunges an impressive 90 feet (27 meters) into the Nant Llech river valley within the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Located near Coelbren, just outside the southern border of the park, Hendrydh Falls topped Time Out’s list of 10 British spots that resemble tropical paradises. The waterfall’s lush, wooded gorge is said to resemble the famed Nungnung and Tegenungan waterfalls in Bali, according to the magazine.
However, visitors are advised to pack sturdy boots and waterproof clothing rather than swimwear, as the waterfall is located in the rugged Welsh countryside.
The falls became widely recognized when featured as the backdrop for Batman’s lair in The Dark Knight Rises, where Christian Bale’s Batman disappears behind the waterfall en route to his hidden sanctuary.
The area also offers opportunities for birdwatching, with dippers and wagtails frequently spotted hunting insects along the river, as reported by the Trust.
Hendrydh Falls sits atop a geological fault line, and its waters cascade over a hard sandstone lip called Farewell Rock, named by coal miners who once gave it that title due to the lack of coal found beneath it.
In the 1800s, geologist William Logan discovered two fossilized trees at the base of the falls, which remain on display at Swansea Museum today.
There are various accommodation options around the falls, ranging from holiday apartments to hotels. Cedar Leaf & Sage accommodates up to eight people, Breconview Lodge sleeps two, and Waterfall Country Escape offers space for up to 15 guests.
Coelbren is a half-hour drive from Merthyr Tydfil via the A465, or accessible by bus from Merthyr Tydfil on the T4 route to Builth Wells, with a transfer at Brecon for the T6 toward Swansea.
