British Columbia’s film and tourism industries have come together to launch Cineventure, a cutting-edge digital platform that turns the province’s most iconic filming locations into immersive tourism experiences. Officially live today at cineventure.ca, the platform offers interactive Routes and detailed trip-planning Itineraries, allowing visitors to explore the magic of film and television firsthand. From the Emmy Award-winning Disney series Shōgun to Netflix’s global hit Virgin River, Cineventure brings BC’s cinematic landscapes to life.
This trailblazing initiative is a collaboration between the BC Film Commission, Screen BC, and six municipal Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs)—marking the first major alliance between two of the province’s most influential industries. In 2022, BC’s tourism sector generated $18.5 billion in revenue, while the film and television industry contributed $5.4 billion to the province’s GDP in 2021/22. Cineventure is set to bridge these powerhouse industries, elevating BC’s status as a world-class destination for both travelers and film enthusiasts.
“British Columbia has earned its place as North America’s fourth-largest production hub through decades of excellence in film and television production,” says Marnie Gee, BC Film Commissioner. “Cineventure now allows us to showcase this legacy in an entirely new way, creating a bridge between our creative industry and tourism sector. When visitors explore these locations, they’re not just walking in the footsteps of beloved characters – they’re experiencing firsthand the stunning versatility of our province that has made it a favorite among filmmakers worldwide. This platform celebrates the incredible work of our film industry while creating sustainable tourism opportunities that will benefit communities across British Columbia.”
At launch, Cineventure offers 25 free, self-guided interactive Routes across Greater Vancouver, highlighting the region’s extraordinary diversity as a filming destination. Film and TV fans can step into the worlds of Riverdale’s high school drama, the romance of When Calls the Heart, the comedy classic Happy Gilmore, and the supernatural allure of Twilight, among many others.
For Virgin River enthusiasts, the platform features a comprehensive four-day Itinerary, guiding visitors through the series’ most iconic filming spots. Travelers can explore the quaint streets of Fort Langley, dine at the Watershed Grill—better known as Jack’s Bar, soak in the stunning views of Bowen Island, and wander through the historic charm of New Westminster. With Cineventure, fans can go beyond the screen and experience the magic of British Columbia’s most famous film locations firsthand.
“This innovative platform represents an exciting new chapter for BC’s tourism industry,” says Chris Peters, Executive Director of Tourism Burnaby and Vice Chair of Cineventure. “By creating these immersive experiences, we’re not only offering visitors a unique way to explore our region, but also encouraging tourism dispersion across our communities and seasons. The diversity of locations featured on Cineventure will help showcase lesser-known destinations while creating sustainable, year-round tourism opportunities throughout British Columbia.”
Cineventure’s interactive Routes provide visitors with a seamless way to explore filming locations using an intuitive map interface. A standout feature is ReelView, an innovative augmented reality tool that lets users hold up their phones at key sites to see stills from scenes shot in that exact location—aligning fiction with reality for an immersive experience.
Beyond these interactive Routes, detailed multi-day Itineraries offer a comprehensive travel guide, complete with suggested activities, must-see landmarks, and dining recommendations, all curated to reflect the distinct atmosphere of each featured production.
More than just a cinematic journey, every Route and Itinerary incorporates educational insights—including local culture, Indigenous land acknowledgments, and environmental stewardship. This thoughtful approach ensures visitors not only connect with their favorite films and shows but also gain a deeper appreciation for British Columbia’s rich heritage and breathtaking landscapes.
“The enthusiasm we’ve seen from both the film and tourism industries has been extraordinary,” says Leslie Wootton, Executive Director of Screen BC and Board Chair of Cineventure. “This launch is just the beginning. The collaborative spirit between our industries has opened up endless possibilities for creating unique experiences that celebrate BC’s role in global entertainment. As we continue to add more Routes and expand to new regions, we’re excited to showcase the full breadth of British Columbia’s film legacy.”
