Guwahati and Silchar to benefit as Bongaigaon Refinery expands capacity by five million metric tonnes, boosting energy output and industrial growth.
The Assam government has announced an ambitious plan to construct its first expressway, a ₹25,000-crore project designed to significantly improve connectivity between Guwahati and Silchar. The proposed expressway will pass through Umiam (Barapani) in Meghalaya, cutting travel time between the two cities to just four hours.
By incorporating Umiam, a renowned tourist destination, the expressway is expected to bolster trade and tourism between Assam and Meghalaya. The four-lane corridor will also enhance industrial access to Panchgram, an important hub home to a paper mill and various industries.
This project is part of a broader infrastructure development initiative, with investments totaling ₹1 lakh crore set to be unveiled at the upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit in Guwahati.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari further announced a ₹55,179-crore infrastructure package, which includes extensive road and railway projects aimed at upgrading transportation networks across Northeast India.
Strengthening Railway and Waterway Connectivity
Rail connectivity in Assam is also receiving a major boost. Two new intercity trains have been introduced, linking Guwahati with Silchar and Agartala. Since 2014, the railway network in Assam has expanded by 1,824 km, and Gati Shakti cargo terminals are being developed to enhance freight movement.
Additionally, the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers will be utilized for both cargo and passenger transport, opening new trade routes and accelerating economic development.
With these transformative infrastructure projects, Assam is on track to emerge as a key economic and transportation hub in Northeast India.
