Thailand has urged Vietnam to explore ways to enhance tourism collaboration, with a particular focus on advancing the “Six Countries, One Destination” initiative.

During an official visit to Vietnam from February 23-25, Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa emphasized the importance of Vietnam as a key regional partner for Thailand. In discussions with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, the focus was on deepening cooperation in tourism, economic growth, and regional connectivity, with special attention to the “Six Countries, One Destination” initiative, as reported by Vietnam News Agency.

Previously, Thailand proposed a joint visa system similar to the Schengen model, aimed at facilitating travel among six nations: Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

If introduced, the unified visa would eliminate the need for travelers to obtain separate visas or travel permits for each country.

Inspired by the European Schengen zone, this integrated visa system would enable tourists to move seamlessly between the participating nations.

Thailand saw a significant increase in tourism last year, welcoming 35.5 million international visitors, marking a 26% rise compared to the previous year, thanks in part to favorable visa regulations.

Meanwhile, Vietnam attracted 17.6 million foreign visitors in 2024, approaching its pre-pandemic tourism figures.
