Wizz Air is exploring a joint airline in Uzbekistan while expanding flight routes to Europe, boosting connectivity and positioning the country as a key transit hub.

Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air is exploring opportunities to form a joint airline in Uzbekistan as part of its expansion strategy in Central Asia. The discussions also focused on enhancing flight connectivity between Uzbekistan and Europe while strengthening transit routes through the country.

Uzbekistan’s Minister of Transport, Ilkhom Makhkamov, recently met with Wizz Air CEO József Váradi and Hungarian Ambassador to Uzbekistan, József Rózsa, to deliberate on the airline’s growth potential in the region.

During the talks, Wizz Air reaffirmed its commitment to boosting air travel options, proposing an increase in flights on the Tashkent – Abu Dhabi – Tashkent route. Additionally, the airline expressed interest in launching services to Namangan and Urgench, further expanding its footprint in Uzbekistan’s aviation sector.

To enhance connectivity with Europe, Minister Makhkamov encouraged Wizz Air to introduce direct flights between Uzbekistan and Hungary, specifically targeting the launch of a regular Tashkent – Budapest – Tashkent route by late 2025. This initiative aligns with Uzbekistan’s broader efforts to position itself as a key transit hub while strengthening economic and tourism ties with Europe.
