Passengers on an Allegiant Air flight grew increasingly frustrated and began chanting “let us off” after being stuck on the tarmac at Albany International Airport for six hours on Monday, 17 February.
Flight 848, which was scheduled to fly from New York state to Punta Gorda, Florida, was delayed due to late deicing procedures. After leaving the gate behind schedule, the aircraft was eventually forced to return because the crew had reached their maximum allowable duty hours within a 24-hour period.
Passengers reported to CBS6 that they were not provided with water during the six-hour delay.
Allegiant Air attributed the prolonged wait to “weather conditions” and “intermittent power outages” at Albany International Airport, which affected the departure process.
Flight 848 was originally scheduled for boarding at 12.15pm, but passengers stated that the plane moved between several gates—three to four times—before they were finally allowed to board at approximately 3.30pm.
The flight was ultimately canceled, and passengers were allowed to disembark at 10.15pm local time.
Allegiant Air has responded by offering refunds to passengers affected by the canceled flight, along with an extra $200 and a $150 travel voucher as a goodwill gesture for the inconvenience.
This isn’t the first instance of passengers being stranded on the tarmac instead of departing as planned.
In June of last year, a group of travelers on an IndiGo flight to Delhi chose to eat their meals on the airport tarmac after dense fog resulted in delays lasting up to 12 hours.
